Men's Swimming & Diving Leads Conference with 16 Academic All-MAC Selections

The conference announced the Academic All-MAC team Friday, April 2
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team placed 16 student-athletes on the Academic All-Mid American Conference team, the league announced Friday, April 2. The Eagles had more selections than any other program, with Miami ranking second with 14 and Southern Illinois coming in third with 12.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student athelte who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particluar sport.
Making the Academic All-MAC team were: Erik Brinkhoff (Bethel Park, Pa.-Bethel Park), Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory), Chris Buzard (Venetia, Pa.-Peters Township), Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Catholic Secondary School), Hunter Cook (Hilliard, Ohio-Hilliard Derby), Dylan Crompton (Redford, Mich.-Thurston), Conner Finnigan (Indianapolis, Ind.-Warren Central), Krzysztof Gilski (Dywity, Poland-Adam Mickiewicz State Secondary), Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet), Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston), Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson), Connor Johnson (Fort Bragg, N.C.-Terry Sanford), Josh Kreider (Coopersburg, Pa.-Southern Lehigh), Kevin Moore (Phoenix, Ariz.-Boulder Creek), Brendan O'Shea (South Lyon, Mich.-South Lyon), and Peter Rusenas (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central). The group features five seniors, six juniors, and five sophomores.
Brinkhoff turned in four top-three finishes on the season before claiming eighth in the 50 Freestyle at the MAC Championships last month. The Bethel Park, Pa. product also added a 16th-place finish in the 100 Backstroke at the conference meet after winning a swim-off with a career-best time of 50.08 to earn a lane in the consolation finals.
A First Team All-MAC selection, Burton's sensational sophomore season was highlighted by three top-six finishes at the MAC Championships. Burton claimed sixth in the 100 Buttefly and fifth in the 100 Backstroke before touching in with the program's second-fastest time in the 200 Butterfly. Clocking in at 1:46.73, Burton reeled in a second-place finish with a career-best that ranks second in EMU laurels. The sophomore freestyle specialist also played a vital role in EMU's relay success. Burton swam the third leg of EMU's record breaking MAC Championship 800 Free Relay as well as a leg of the Eagles' conference winning 400 Free Relay.
Buzard's season came to a close at the Ohio State Invitational, Feb 13-14. There, Buzard posted a few career-bests, including an eighth-place finish in the 200 Breastroke. Besting swimmers from OSU and Kentucky, Buzard's finished with a personal best time of 2:07.85.
Chan earns a spot on the Academic All-MAC team just weeks after being named the MAC Outstanding Diver of the Year and concluding his season at the NCAA Championships. After sweeping the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events at the conference meet, Chan went on to qualify for nationals with a top finish at the NCAA Division I Zone C Diving Championships. On the 3-meter at the MAC meet, Chan set a meet record as well as a pool record with an incredible score of 422.75. Ultimately qualifying for nationals on the 1-meter, Chan capped his season with a 31st-place finish at the NCAA Championships in Atlanta.
Cook's season came to a close at the Ohio State Invitational where the sophomore headlined a strong performance by the Eagles. Nabbing a second-place finish in the 200 Butterfly, Cook finished third in the 400 Individual Medley and 11th in the 200 Freestyle. The top MAC finisher in each of his three events, Cook was named MAC Swimmer of the Week following his impressive weekend.
Crompton also completed his season, and career, at the Ohio State Invitational. Swimming anchor on EMU's first-place 200 Free Relay, Crompton added a fifth-place finish in the 200 Individual Medley. The Redford, Mich. native registered his first collegiate win of his career, Nov. 14, versus Ohio State. Touching in with a time of 21.20, Crompton bested the Buckeyes in the 50 Freestyle for a first-place finish. The top mark was one of five top-three finishes for Crompton over the course of the season.
A second-place finish in the 100 Breastroke at the Ohio State Invitational closed out Finnigan's junior season with a career-best time of 55.87. Finnigan's mark came in nearly a second faster than his previous best and earned him his top finish of the year. He also added a fifth-place finish in the 200 Breastroke and 13th-place finish in the 200 Individual Medley.
Gilski wrapped up a decorated career at the MAC Championships with three top-15 finishes. Claiming 15th in the 500 Freestyle, Gilski added a seventh-place finish in the 200 Butterfly and a program record in the 100 Buttefly. Clocking in with a time of 47.71, Gilski etched his named into the record books with the fastest 100 Butterfly time in EMU annals.
One of EMU's five First Team All-MAC selections, Gissen swam the second leg of EMU's record breaking MAC Champion 400 Freestyle Relay while also swimming parts of four other EMU relays at the MAC Championships. Individually, Gissen posted three of the fastest times in EMU history. In the 100 Butterfly, Gissen touched in fifth with a time of 48.10, the second fastest in program laurels. He later added a runner-up finish in both the 100 and 200 Backstroke. His time of 48.68 ranks as the fourth-fastest in Eastern Michigan records. In the 200 Backstroke, Gissen was part of an EMU sweep of the top-three spots, clocking in at 48.62 Gissen swam the third-fastest race for an Eagle all-time.
Henry earned the distinction of MAC Outstanding Swimmer of the Year following an amazing performance at the MAC Championships that ultimately earned him an opportunity to compete at the national championships in Atlanta. The Garner, N.C. product won the 100 and 200 Freestyle and added a second-place finish in the 200 Individual Medley. Additionally, his times in each of the three events set conference and meet records, while his 100 Freestyle time also broke pool and school bests. Swimming on two MAC Championship relay squads, Henry helped the Eagles to conference, meet, pool, and school records in both the 400 and 800 Freestyle Relays. Additionally, Henry set a school record for the 200 Freestyle as the leadoff swimmer of EMU's 800 Freestyle Relay. A two-time MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week selection and two-time MAC Swimmer of the Week honoree, Henry concluded his career at the NCAA Championships where he became EMU's top finisher in the the 200 Freestyle in more than 25 years.
During the regular season, Hodges finished no lower than second in either the 100 or 200 Breaststroke, highlighted by five consecutive wins in the 200 Breaststroke. At the MAC Championships, Hodges reeled in a seventh-place finish in the 200 Breastroke and nabbed 10th in the 100 Breaststroke.
Johnson showed imense improvement from his freshman season, turning in four first-place finishes over the course of the season, all of which came in the 100 Butterfly. The sophomore posted a trio of career-best at the MAC Championships. In the 50 Freestyle, Johnson claimed 13th while he also took 16th in the 200 Butterfly. His top finish of the MAC meet came in the 100 Butterfly where Johnson claimed seventh with a time of 48.82, the eighth fastest in EMU annals.
Kreider was part of the EMU contingent that ended the season at the Ohio State Invitational. There the sophomore finished 15th in the 200 Freestyle and tied for 11th in the 50 Freestyle. The Coopersburg, Pa. product's best race of the season came against Wayne State where he claimed third in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:44.63.
A pair of career-bests headlined Moore's junior season. Taking part in the Ohio State Invitiational, Moore racked up a third-place finish in the 100 Butterfly with a career-best time of 49.58. He also added a sixth-place finish in the 100 Freestyle behind a personal-best 45.91 and tied for eighth in the 50 Freestyle. The Phoenix, Ariz. native also swam a leg of EMU's first-place 200 Freestyle Relay.
O'Shea was one of three EMU divers making the cut. The South Lyon, Mich. product placed sixth on the 1-meter and 12th on the 3-meter at the MAC Championships. His best performance of the season came against Wayne State, where he won the 1-meter with a career-best score of 315.60. O'Shea also added a pair of second-place finishes on the 3-meter throughout the year.
Rounding out the Eagles' selections is Rusenas.One of three divers making the list for the Green and White, Rusenas finished third on the 1-meter and fourth on the 3-meter at the MAC Championships. He registered one first-place finish during the season, taking the top spot versus Wayne State with a score of 356.63 on the 3-meter.
