EMU completed their third shutout of the season

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team used a stellar balance of hitting and pitching to blank the University of Notre Dame 8-0 in non-conference play Wednesday evening, April 27 at Frank Eck Stadium.  It was the third shutout of the season for the Eagles (15-22, 6-6 MAC).

Combining for the shutout were sophomore Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich.-Canton) and freshman Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) who collectively only allowed six hits over nine innings. Mattson got his first win of the season going 5.2 strong innings, striking out two.  In relief, Feldman earned his first career EMU save with 3.1 innings, striking out three.

Sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) led the Eagles offensively with a 3-for-5 day with three doubles, two RBI's and three runs scored.  It was his second three-hit game of the year and he was the first player to collect three doubles in a game since 2011.

Elsewhere, sophomore David Lett (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington) finished the day with a 2-for-3 game with a pair of singles.  Three other players had two-RBI games including redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw), redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter), and freshman John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge), the first multi-RBI in his EMU career.

After a quick first inning, EMU struck first in the second with a run on a ND (24-16, 9-10 ACC) miscue.  Williams led the frame off with a double in the gap and was advanced to third on a groundout.  On the next play, a grounder to the pulled in infield drew a throw home, but the throw was wild, allowing Williams to score and giving EMU the 1-0 lead.

On the bump, the starter Mattson cruised through the first three innings without allowing a run, and giving up just one hit.  The defense was crucial in his success, including an acrobatic play at shortstop from Gill in the third inning.  He gave up two more hits in the fourth, but the righty tightened up, keeping the one run advantage into the fifth.

EMU capitalized on another ND error in the top of the fifth, when senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) singled on a bunt, and advanced to second on the throwing error.  After reaching third on a fielder's choice on a second straight bunt, Wilson was scored on an RBI groundout from Gill, doubling EMU's lead and pushing the score to 2-0.

Mattson pitched even stronger in the fifth, getting through the inning without allowing a run and striking out his first two batters of the night.  He was rewarded with a third run in the sixth when Williams led off with a double in the corner, advancing to third on an error.  The next batter, Mioduszewski, launched a sacrifice fly to center, extending the lead to 3-0 into the bottom of the sixth.

Mattson allowed a pair of runners in the sixth but got through 5.2 before being pulled for a reliever, ending his day without giving up a run.  The reliever, Feldman, got the next batter out to take the game to the seventh.

The Eagles scored in their third consecutive inning in the seventh with some clutch two-out hitting.  After Lett's second hit of the night with one out, he reached second on a groundout and scored after a base knock from Gill into left field, giving EMU a 4-0 lead.  After a walk put runners on first and second, Williams smacked his third double of the night to left center, clearing the bases and extending the lead to 6-0.

After a pitching change, Mioduszewski kept the train running with a bloop single to right, scoring Williams and making things 7-0.  One more run came around with a Rensel Jr. double, making things 8-0 going into the stretch.  In the bottom of the seventh, Feldman went a quick one-two-three; keeping EMU's 8-0 lead into the eighth.

The rookie was lights out in the eighth and ninth, shutting down ND with only one hit allowed and two strikeouts, sealing the 8-0 win.

Eastern gets back into conference action this weekend with a three-game home set versus Central Michigan University.  First pitch for Friday's game at Oestrike Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
