Each week two Eagles will be honored for their success on the field
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Each week, the Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics names the EMU Financial's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic media relations department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are baseball player Mitchell McGeein and women's golfer Kelsey Murphy.
Mitchell McGeein
Sport: Baseball
Position: Infield
Year: Senior
Major: Exercise Science
Week's Achievements:
McGeein was the leader offensively for the Eagles in the weekend series vs in-state rival Western Michigan. The senior went 5-for-12 (.417) over the three-game set, including clubbing two home runs, putting his team-leading total to seven on the season. His solo home run in the fourth inning of Sunday's game was the difference in a 5-3 extra inning victory over the Broncos. The dinger also marked the 100th RBI of his career, just the 24th Eagle to ever accomplish that feat. It was also his 26th career home run, putting him in a tie for ninth place on the all-time EMU list.
Kelsey Murphy

Week's Achievements: Murphy finished in 13th-place with a 222 (71-73-78) at the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championship on the par-72, 6,257 yard Purgatory Golf Club course. The top-15 showing was the 16th of her career as she also collected Second Team All-MAC honors. In total, the Plymouth, Mich. native led the team with an average of 74.44, the lowest in school history. Overall it was a very successful weekend for the Eagles, as EMU's 54-hole score shattered the program's previous MAC Championship low by 29 strokes which was set in 2003 at Walden Ponds in Hamilton, Ohio, with a 925 (309-317-299). Additionally, the team's 290 was the lowest 18-hole mark in the team's 57 all-time rounds in MAC Tournament play. Altogether, the three-round tally is eighth best in school history and the single-day score is tied for second all-time in EMU laurels. One of the best seasons in program history, the Eagles posted the lowest 18-hole average in program history at 304.04. The tally finished 1.7 strokes ahead of the 2011-12 squad's previous standard of 305.74. Overall, Eastern Michigan finished in the top-five at six different tournaments this season, including a second-place finish in the The Preview, which has also hosted by EMU at Purgatory in the fall.
