NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Battling windy and cool conditions, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team experienced much more difficult scoring conditions on the second day of the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championship than it did during the opening round. Just five individuals in the 50 player field were able to post a round of par-or-better Saturday, April 23, on the par-72, 6,257-yard Purgatory Golf Club course.
Head Coach Pina Gentile's squad entered the day in fifth place, and left the course following Saturday's round in sixth. The host Eagles carded a second round 310 for a two-day cumulative score of 606 (296-310). Coming from third place, 17-time defending champion Kent State University scorched the course with a three-under 285 for a 579 (294-285) and a three-stroke advantage heading into Sunday's final 18 holes.
Kent State will be joined by the University of Toledo (289-293=582) and Ohio University (301-292=593) in the final five threesomes of Sunday's round. Rounding out the field in order are Western Michigan University (293-306=599) in fourth, the University of Akron (300-302=602) in fifth, EMU (606) in sixth, Bowling Green (295-313=608) and Northern Illinois University (310-298=608) tied for seventh, Ball State University (311-306=617) in ninth, and Central Michigan University in 10th (317-321=638)
Individually, Akron's Danielle Nicholson holds the lead with a four-under 140 (69-71) followed by Toledo's Pimchanok Kawil and Ohio's Emily Hughes in second place at 142. Also, of note, the Golden Flashes' Wad Phaewchimplee posted the lowest single-round in championship history with a four-under 68.
Junior Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) is tied for fifth with an even-par 144 (71-73) after posting a trio of birdies on the afternoon. She remains just four strokes behind the leader. Sophomore Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) is 31st after managing a 79 in the second round for a 154 (75-79).
Freshman Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) also notched a 79 for a 34th at 155 (76-79) while senior Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario-St. Augustine Secondary School) is tied for 36th at a 156 (77-79). Senior Lauren Stephens (Dublin, Ohio-Coffman) rebounded on the back nine after a slow start to finish with a birdie on the 18th for a 157 (74-83) in 38th.
The third and final round of the 2016 MAC Women's Golf Championship will get underway at 8 a.m. Sunday, April 24. Following competition, MAC Golfer, Freshman, Coach and Sportswomen of the Year, First and Second Team All-MAC and the All-Tournament team will be announced.
