YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The long ball proved to be the demise of the Eastern Michigan University softball team in its series opener versus Northern Illinois University, Friday afternoon, April 22, at Varsity Field. The Huskies (29-13, 10-5 MAC) touched up the Eagles (18-24, 8-7 MAC) for two home runs on the day, eventually taking the series opener, 5-1
.
Junior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) was sacked with the loss after 2.2 innings of work. Despite giving up just three hits, Minsker was tagged for five runs. Sophomore Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) entered in relief, going 4.1 innings.
At the plate, junior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) picked up her 16th multi-hit performance of the season. Kriegshauser finished the day 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.
The Huskies plated the first run of game in the top of the second on a solo shot to centerfield. It looked as though NIU would add more after an error and hit batter put two on with one out, but Minsker pitched her way out of it with a little help from her backstop. After a fly out to center, NIU had runners on the corners with two outs and attempted to steal. Thankfully for Minsker and the Eagles, senior Aoife Duffy (Powell, Ohio-Olentangy Liberty) delivered a perfect throw down to second, getting the Green and White out of the jam.
Northern Illinois extended their lead in the third, hammering a grand slam to center to take a 5-0 lead. The long ball was followed by a pitching change for the Eagles, as Minsker departed. Trujillo entered in relief and got the job done, retiring the lone batter she faced in the frame to send the Eagles to the bat rack.
Trujillo and the Eagles ran into some trouble in the fifth, as NIU put two aboard with one out. In a jam, Trujillo shook off a hit batter and struck out the following batter before receiving some help from her defense. A hard hit grounder up the middle was snagged by sophomore Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan). Laying out for the grounder, Hostetler scooped it up behind the bag and dove to second to end the inning.
The energy from Hostetler's defensive play carried over to the Eagles offensive half of the fifth. Senior Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange) led the inning off with a single to center and came around to score on an RBI single off the bat of Kriegshauser. Freshman Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) followed it up with a chopper through the left side, chasing Northern Illinois' starter. A walk loaded the bases for the Eagles with two outs, but a ground out to second ended the threat.
A quick sixth, highlighted by Duffy throwing out her second base runner of the game, sent the Eagles to the plate for their final at bats, trailing 5-1. Freshman Sam Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt) drew a leadoff walk to get things going for EMU and Kriegshauser drew one of her own to put two on for the Eagles with two outs but the Eagles' rally fell short as a fly ball sealed the 5-1 defeat.
The Eagles close out the weekend series tomorrow, April 23, with a twin bill versus the Huskies. First pitch of the opening leg is set for 1 p.m. with the second game slated to follow before the day closes out with senior day ceremonies recognizing EMU's six seniors.
