The Pennsylvania native will join the 2016 MAC Champions as a walk-on

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Jay Santos, the Head Coach of the Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team, announced today, April 20, that Allie Smith (Telford, Pa. - Souderton Area) will join the squad next season as a walk-on.

"We are very excited about Allie joining our team in the fall," explained Santos. "She has a tremendous work ethic, and we feel that she has a lot of passion for the sport of gymnastics. Walking in the door, she will help add depth to our power events, where she excels on vault and floor. During the recruitment process, her excitement for EMU was very evident and we are thrilled to have her as an Eagle."

Smith, who trained at Silvia's Gymnastics in Zieglerville, Pa., found plenty of success on vault as a level 10 throughout the 2013-16 seasons. In total, she had nine top-three finishes on the event within that time span, including a third-place finish at the Pennsylvania State Championships in 2015. Her top score on vault as a level 10 was a 9.7, coming at the Pink Invitational in 2015. Additionally, Smith was also a solid competitor on floor, regularly notching top-five finishes. Posting back-to-back career-high 9.475's in 2015, she will look to bring her powerful tumbling  to Ypsilanti as a freshman next season.

Smith will join Amanda Arnold (Okemos, Mich. - Okemos)Hollie Minichiello (Orlando, Fla. - East River), and Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill. - Carl Sandburg) as part of next year's class. With the 2016 campaign coming to a close last weekend at the NCAA Championships, the Eagles are now gearing up for summer training, and getting ready for the 2017 season.
