Four 5000m runners all had fantastic races, notching new personal-bests

NORWALK, Calif./LONG BEACH, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – For the third consecutive day, the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team competed in a pair of meets out in California yesterday, April 15. The distance group led the way, with all four 5000m runners notching personal-best times.
Beginning at the Mt SAC Relays, sophomore Brandon Bolden (Solon, Ohio – Solon) led Eastern in the sprints, running both the 100m and the 200m. In the 100m dash open, he clocked in at 10.63, while his time in the 200m dash open was 21.67. In the 400m dash open, senior Matthew Williams (Moreno Valley, Calif. – Vista Del Lago) clocked in at 49.33
The Eagles also did well in the mid-distance events. In the 800m run open, senior Scott Bradley (Battle Creek, Mich. – Lakeview) finished 13th, crossing the finish line in 1:50.97. Fellow senior Mason Waynes (Kenosha, Wis. – Bradford) also ran in the race, clocking in at 1:51.80. Moving to the 1500m run open, graduate student Joshua Sabo (Akron, Ohio – Revere) posted a top-ten finish, claiming seventh with a personal-best time of 3:48.92. Redshirt sophomore Mitch Lenneman (River Falls, Wis. – River Falls) also ran, crossing the finish line in 3:51.56.
The distance group shined in the 5000m, as all four runners' secured personal-best times. In the 5000m open, sophomore Csaba Matko (Racalmas, Hungary - Szechenyi Istvan Gimnazium) led the way, clocking in at 14:06.89 to beat his best indoor time by nearly 14 seconds. His time was also the ninth quickest in EMU history. Redshirt sophomore Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) also turned in a career-high, posting a time of 14:18.90, nearly 17 seconds quicker than his previous fastest time. Finally, fellow redshirt sophomore Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. – Mason) crossed the finish line in 14:21.45 to set a new personal-record by 20 seconds. In the 5000m elite race, redshirt junior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio – Maumee) had a fantastic race, clocking in at 13:43.06, setting a new personal-best by eight seconds, as well as bringing him to within three seconds of the second fastest 5000 time in EMU history run by Gordon Minty in 1972.
Senior Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa. – Grater Latrobe Senior) rounded out the Eagles at the Mt SAC Relays, participating in the 400m hurdles open. The senior finished with a time of 52.25 to take home the bronze in a tightly-contested race.
Moving to the Beach Invitational, Eastern had the duo of redshirt senior Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill. – Williamsville) and redshirt junior Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio – Sandusky) compete in the hammer throw for the second consecutive day. Williams edged out Jones, posting a mark of 61.56 meters/ 202 feet to take 7th, while Jones finished with a throw of 58.03 meters/ 190 feet 5-inches to place 17th. Rounding out the competitors for EMU, freshman Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa. – Parkland) took part in the javelin throw, claiming 22nd with a mark of 62.15 meters/ 203 feet 11-inches.
Eastern concludes their trip to the west coast today, April 16, with the final day of competition at both the Mt SAC Relays, as well as the Beach Invitational.
