The Eagles had the most student-athletes out of all MAC institutions

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Mid-American Conference announced Friday, April 15, the list of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from the eight winter sports for the 2015-16 academic season. Out of the 202 student-athletes on the list, 32 Eagles, the most in the conference, were selected as the 'best of the best' from each sport's Academic All-MAC Teams.

The indoor men's track and field team had the most selections of any EMU team, coming in with nine honorees. Fresh off their MAC title, the women's indoor track and field team saw five student-athletes named Distinguished Scholar Athletes. Additionally, both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams had six selected, while wrestling finished with one. Rounding out the Green and White was gymnastics, who had five honorees. Of the 32 Eagles receiving the honor, a whopping 19 maintained a GPA of 3.75 or better, while two had perfect GPA's of 4.0.

From the Academic All-MAC Teams, the faculty athletic representatives selected the 'best of the best' of our Academic All-MAC Teams to be honored with Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Awards for the 2015-16 season.  The number of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from each sport were equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 33% of nominees, whichever was greater.

The Distinguished Scholar Athlete is a second-year award given to students who have excelled in athletics and academics.  Following each season from the winter sports schedule, any student with a 3.20 GPA and participation in at least 50 percent of the contests was automatically named to the previously announced Academic All-MAC Team from each sport.  Also, first-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence were not eligible for the award.

Later this spring, the MAC will announce the Distinguished Scholar Athletes from the remaining eight spring sports sponsored by the Conference.
