Offense Leads the Way in Softball's 8-6 Win Over Toledo

The Eagles recorded a season-high 14 hits

TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Returning to Mid-American Conference action, the Eastern Michigan University softball team traveled to Scott Park Wednesday, April 13, for the series finale versus the University of Toledo. The Eagles (15-23, 5-6 MAC) avoided the sweep with an 8-6 victory over the Rockets (8-28, 3-8 MAC) behind a season-high 14 hits, highlighted by six multi-hit performances.

Junior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) was touched up for three runs early, making way for a relief appearance for freshman Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles). Miranda allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits over 4.1 innings of work to pick up her team-leading seventh win of the season.

A hit by pitch loaded the bases for the Rockets with no outs in the third and UT took full advantage of the opportunity. After an infield fly, a collision in the outfield allowed a runner to tag from third on a fly out. The Rockets doubled their lead on a RBI single through the right side before Miranda entered the game in relief. Inheriting the bags packed and two outs, Miranda surrendered a single up the middle. The runner from third scored on the base knock, but senior Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange) put a throw from center on the money, allowing senior Aoife Duffy (Powell, Ohio-Olentangy Liberty) to tag the runner out at the plate to end the inning. The three-run frame put UT in front, 3-0, with three innings in the books.

The Eagles got one back in the fourth to pull with two, 3-1. A two-out double off the bat of Duffy was followed by a RBI single to center by sophomore Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace).

Davidson broke the fifth inning open with a double down the right field line and scooted into third on an errant throw. Freshman Lucy Lopez stepped to the plate and quickly fell behind in the count, 0-2. Fighting back and pushing the count full, Lopez lined a single to center, scoring Davidson. Lopez moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and the Rockets elected to intentionally walk freshman Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra), setting the table for junior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central). After cranking a few pitches foul, Kriegshauser singled to center to score one. The grounder took an odd hop off the edge of the grass and bounced past the charging centerfielder, allowing the Eagles to take their first lead of the game, 4-3.

UT put the leadoff batter aboard in the bottom half of the fifth but the Eagles defense kept the Rockets from capitalizing. Miranda fanned the next batter and Kriegshauser pulled down a fly ball in front of the fence in right center. With all of her momentum carrying towards the fence, Kriegshauser turned and fired a throw to first, doubling up the runner and ending the inning.

The Green and White erupted for four runs on three hits in the sixth. Sophomore Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) drew a leadoff walk to get things going. After a sacrifice bunt put Hostetler on second, Lopez drew a walk, bringing freshman Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) to the plate. Logan singled to center, scoring Hostetler from second, giving EMU an insurance run. Akles then came through with a sacrifice fly after a wild pitch moved runners to second and third. With both runners tagging on the play, the Eagles pushed their lead to 6-3. The Eagles added two more runs in the frame as Logan and senior Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) each added RBI singles. Eastern Michigan's lead stood at five, 8-3, with Toledo coming to the plate in the sixth.

Toledo plated a run in the sixth, cutting EMU's lead to four, 8-4. A muffed infield fly with two outs scored one but Miranda buckled down in the circle and retired the Rockets.

Eastern Michigan went down relatively quietly in the seventh, bringing UT to the plate for its final at bats. The Rockets delivered a two-run shot with two outs to cut into EMU's lead but Miranda induced a game-ending ground ball to seal the victory, 8-6.

The Eagles open a six-game home stand Friday, April 15, against MAC West Division foe, Ball State University. The series lid lifter with the Cardinals gets underway with a 3 p.m. first pitch at Varsity Field.
