Simmons Completes First Day of Mt SAC Combined Events

The redshirt senior finished with two top-three finishes in the first five events

AZUSA, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team began their trip west today, April 13, with the Mt. SAC Relays Combined Events. The Eagles were represented by redshirt senior Solomon Simmons (Murrieta, Calif. – Murrieta Valley), who positioned himself well in the decathlon with a pair of top-three finishes on the day.
Simmons opened the day in the 100m, racing to a fifth-place finish with a time of 11.01. The second event on the day was the long jump, where the redshirt senior finished with a mark of 6.72 meters/ 22 feet 0.5-inches to take 10th. Simmons then posted his top event finish of the day, nabbing the gold in the shot put with a throw of 14.89 meters/ 48 feet 10.25-inches, edging out Zack Bornstein of UCLA by .19 meters.
The final two events on the day came in the form of the high jump and the 400m dash. In the high jump, Simmons finished with a mark of 1.81 meters/ 5 feet 11.25-inches to place seventh. Closing out the day, the Murrieta, Calif. native posted his second top-three finish in the first five events, taking second in the 400m dash with a time of 49.40. With half of the decathlon complete, Simmons sat in sixth with a total of 3867 points, putting him on pace to finish just behind his career best, and program record, of 7862 set last season.
Simmons, along with other members of the team, continue competition tomorrow, April 14. The redshirt senior will resume action at 12:30 p.m. with the 110m hurdles, while the Eagles at the Beach Pacific Coast Invitational will begin at 9 a.m. Finally, the Mt. SAC Relays meet will begin at 6 p.m.
