The Eastern Michigan University women's golf and volleyball teams received NCAA Public Recognition Awards Wednesday, April 13, for their exceptional work in the classroom as part of the NCAA's Academic Performance Program. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. This is the fourth straight year that volleyball has been honored while it marks the first time for women's golf.

The awards are given annually to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their Academic Progress Rates (APR). The scores required to be in the top 10 ranged from 983 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. Earning a perfect APR score were 944 teams.

"The efforts of our student-athletes to excel in the classroom continues to be impressive," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Heather Lyke. "We know that our student-athletes relish the opportunity to receive a first class education at EMU. Their success is shared by our faculty, who support them and our coaches, and administrators, who work to ensure their continued success. The work of our SASS office, led by Dr. Talea Drummer and her team, has been exceptional and I know our students have benefited from their advice, guidance and academic support.."

The 1,071 teams publicly recognized for high achievement include 649 women's teams and 422 men's or mixed squads. This year, schools combined the indoor and outdoor track and field teams into one team score, which slightly reduced the overall number of teams earning Public Recognition Awards.

"We want to ensure college athletes are getting the most out of their experience, and academics are a top priority in this effort," said NCAA President Mark Emmert. "The teams honored today earned recognition by making a commitment to success in the classroom as well as in competition. We celebrate their achievement and dedication to preparing themselves for life after college."

Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The rate measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2011-12, 2012-2013, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years.

A perfect score (or graduation rate) is represented by 1,000, while a 925 (50 percent rate) marks the threshold for which the NCAA can impose sanctions on athletic programs. Full APRs for all teams, including access to postseason play and penalties for low-performing teams, will be released April 20.

A total of 68 Division I programs received public recognition in women's volleyball, including Central Michigan University and Kent State University from the Mid-American Conference. EMU joined Bowling Green State University, CMU, and KSU as the league's women's golf recipients.

The MAC had a total of 20 programs recognized Wednesday, while a total of 20 Division I athletic teams from the state of Michigan earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA.

In the 11 years since APR Public Recognition Awards have been handed out, Eastern Michigan has been honored 17 times in nine different sports.
