The Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics held the second annual Ypsi Awards at the Convocation Center Monday, April 11, to honor the top athletic, citizenship, and academic achievements by EMU student-athletes during the 2015-16 academic year.

The Ypsi Awards saw EMU student-athletes, coaches, athletic department and university staff come together to honor the Eagles' best individuals and teams, as well as the 2015-16 seniors from each of Eastern Michigan's 21 sport programs. The 90-minute ceremony featured live performances, video skits, and awards presentations by several EMU student-athletes and staff.

Men's basketball player Trent Perry and women's track and field's Anna Aldrich served as the student emcees, while a wide-range of student-athletes, coaches, and administration presented the awards to the winners. Eastern Michigan coaches nominated student-athletes for the awards and the list was narrowed down to four finalists in each category by members of the Eastern Michigan University Student-Athlete Experience Committee. The winners for every award, except Play of the Year, were selected by the Eastern Michigan University's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), which is made up of representatives from every EMU intercollegiate athletics team.

Senior swimmer Andrew Henry headlined the award show for the men, taking home a pair of Ypsi Awards. The Garner N.C. native's record breaking 200 freestyle race at the 2016 Mid-American Conference men's swimming and diving championships earned him Play of the Year honors, while his astounding season earned him the Male Athlete of the Year award.  This season, Henry was named to the All-MAC First Team and the MAC Outstanding Swimmer at the MAC Championships. He broke a school record as the leadoff of EMU's record-breaking 800 Free Relay with a 200 free split of 1:34.20, while he set a school, pool, meet, and conference record with a 1:34.99 in the 200 freestiyle, while setting a record in the 100 as well.

Junior cross country and track and field athlete Alsu Bogdanova was named Female Athlete of the Year, earning all-region honors for her ninth place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Cross Country Regional, following her MAC Championship performance at the 2015 Women's Cross Country MAC Championships. Additionally, Bogdavona took home MAC Championships in both the one mile run and the 5000m run on her way to All-MAC First team honors and the coveted Most Valuable Performer on the way to the Eagles' second-straight MAC Indoor Track and Field Championship.

James Thompson IV was named Male Newcomer of the Year after an outstanding freshman season on the hardwood. Thompson earned All-MAC Second Team honors after being one of just two student-athletes in the MAC to average a double-double (14.8 ppg and 10.7 rpg). Additionally, the Baton Rouge, La. native was named the MAC Freshman of the Year, becoming just the second EMU student-athlete to garner the honor in men's basketball.  Thompson shot 64.5 percent from the floor, which ranked in the top-10 in the NCAA in large part to the Baton Rouge, La. native tying a then-NCAA record of 26-straight field goal makes. Freshman swimmer Delaney Duncan captured the Female Newcomer of the Year, earning All-American Honorable Mention status following her run to the 2016 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Duncan was the first freshman in EMU program history to qualify for nationals where she clocked in a time of 59.90 in the 100 Breaststroke, good for 12th in the NCAA. In addition, Duncan was an All-MAC First Team awardwinner after taking home a MAC Championship in the 200 Breaststroke.

Men's cross country was honored for the second consecutive season as the Men's Team of the Year after capturing its sixth consecutive and MAC 20th title in program history with 26 points, while the women's gymnastics team was also honored as the Female Team of the Year for the second-straight season. The gymnastics team took home its second ever MAC Championship, while qualifying for the NCAA Regionals for the first time in EMU history. The squad also broke its best team score in school history at Bowling Green, Feb. 13, when it locked in a 196.600.

Academically, the men's golf and women's cross country teams were honored as the Academic Teams of the Year, while Julia Lombardi (women's soccer) and Dylan Mulder (football) were named E-Club Female and Male Scholar Athletes of the Year.
