Eagles Rowing Braves Rough Weather, Claims Three Wins at Lubbers Cup

EMU placed first or second in all seven races
SPRING LAKE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University rowing team overcame harsh weather conditions to claim three victories at the 21st Annual Lubbers Cup Saturday-Sunday, April 9-10, at Spring Lake in western Michigan.
The freezing temperatures, as well as heavy precipitation in the area of competition, forced numerous races to be cancelled over the two-day span, including two of the races EMU was scheduled to race in.
In total, Eastern ran in seven races, including three for the Varsity 8 boat, and two for both the Varsity 4 and Novice 8. The Varsity 8 boat claimed victory in two of their races, while the Novice 8 boat won one of its two races. In all seven of the events, EMU either took first of second in their respective races.
When looking back on the weekend as a whole, Head Coach Kemp Savage was proud of how his team battled through the adversity of the weather to find success on the water.
"This weekend, the weather was really a huge part of the competition. The team did an incredible job of not only rowing incredibly well in rough water, but also dealing with snow and a five-hour hold on Saturday. Through this, all three boats competed exceptionally well," Savage explained. "The first Varsity 8 beat all the Division-I competition, the V4 finished second in their two races with their Saturday afternoon race cancelled, and the Novice 8 finished second in their first race and first in their second. Every coach wants athletes that can deal with the unexpected and this team excelled despite the unexpected."
In the first race of the weekend, EMU's Varsity 8 boat took victory over Purdue and Marquette with a final time of 7:40.9, coming in almost 11 seconds ahead of the next boat. In the first race for the Novice 8 boat, they took second in a four-team race, defeating Cincinnati and Marquette with a time of 4:41.8, only falling to Purdue by about two seconds.
Eastern's third race on Saturday, the Varsity 4 boat, also took second defeating boats from Dayton and Drake. The Varsity 8 boat claimed its second win of the day with a time of 6:45.5, beating boats from Dayton, Drake and Illinois. In the final Saturday race, Eastern picked up its third win, as the Novice 8 boat took gold with a time of 7:18.5, over Dayton and Illinois. The final Varsity 4 race was cancelled.
Picking up again on Sunday, EMU claimed second place finishes in both of its races, with Varsity 4 and 8 boats competing. The final Eagle race, a Novice 8 race, was cancelled, ending the weekend.
The Eagles are back in action next weekend with competitions on the East coast, beginning with a dual versus Bucknell, Saturday, April 16, followed by the George Mason Invite, Sunday, April 17.
