Eagles Begin Outdoor Season with Victory Over Western Michigan

The Green and White bested MAC opponent WMU to open the season

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team opened their 2016 outdoor campaign with a dual victory against Mid-American Conference opponent Western Michigan today, April 1. The Eagles walked away with a 109-82 win over the Broncos.
Beginning with the sprints group, the Eagles claimed event victories in both the 100m and 200m dash while claiming second in the 400m dash. Freshman Jessica Harris (Slidell, La. – Slidell) took home the 100m title, clocking in at 11.85 seconds to edge out senior Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind. – John Adams), who nabbed second. Rounding out the top-three in the event for the Eagles was senior Morgan Yeadon (Indianapolis, Ind. – Pike), who took fourth in a career-best 12.08 seconds. Moving to the 200m dash, McKinney managed to beat out a sprinter from WMU for the gold, crossing the finish line in 24.49 seconds. Both Harris and Yeadon turned in solid races as well, with Harris taking fourth and Yeadon finishing fifth. In the 400m dash, sophomore Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa. – Hempfield Area) took home the silver, clocking in at 58.35 seconds, which marked a personal-best. Senior Iesha Hardiman (Santa Clara, Calif. – Adrian Wilcox) was the team's next top finisher, nabbing fifth.
Moving to the mid-distance events, the Green and White swept both the 800m and the 1500m run. Sophomore Jenna Wyns (Londerzeel, Belgium – Sportschol KA2) claimed the 800m title after finishing the race in a career-best 2:15.63. Fellow sophomore Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. – Rockford Lutheran) finished just behind Wyns, claiming second with a time of 2:17.52. Rounding out the top-three was sophomore Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. – Chippewa Valley), who crossed the finish line in 2:18.95. Cizmas did manage to win the 1500m run, however, after posting a time of 4:38.92, which was a personal-best. Just behind her, freshman Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. – Zionsville Community) took second in 4:44.86, while senior Rebecca Quaintance (White Lake, Mich. – Walled Lake Northern) took third. In the lone distance event on the day, senior Amy Frauhammer (Saline, Mich. – Saline) took home the gold in the 3000m, posting a career-best time of 10:12.14.
Senior Maya Carter (Racine, Wis. – Case) led Eastern in the 100m hurdles, taking another event title after posting a career-best time of 14.00 seconds. Freshman Ayanna O'Neal (Cincinnati, Ohio – Withrow) had a nice race as well, claiming third with a time of 14.22. The Green and White also nabbed two of the top-three spots in the 400m hurdles, as junior Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif. – Carson) finished second in 1:03.56, while Carter took the bronze in 1:06.87.
EMU also found success in the relays, as the group of Harris, McKinney, Yeadon, and Jones claimed the gold in the 4x100m relay with a time of 46.05. The Eagles also took second in the 4x400m relay, as Khadesha James (Irvington, N.J. - Irvington), Hurd, senior Iesha Hardiman (Santa Clara, Calif. - Adrian Wilcox), and Jones crossed the finish line in 4:02.77, but were narrowly edged out by a group from Western.
In the high jump, junior Kristina Coyne (Pittsburgh, Pa. – Chartiers Valley) paced the Green and White with a mark of 1.61 meters/ 5 feet 3.25-inches, a personal-best, to take second. Just behind her, junior Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio – Fairmont) took third with a jump of 1.56 meters/ 5 feet 1.25-inches. Sophomore Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia - Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) dominated both the long jump and the triple jump, taking the gold in both events. Specifically, she finished with a mark of 5.82 meters/ 19 feet 1.25-inches in the long jump, and 12.36 meters/ 40 feet 6.75-inches in the triple jump. Junior Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich. – Grand Rapids Christian) also claimed the silver in the long jump, posting a mark of 5.70 meters/ 18 feet 8.50-inches, while Coyne nabbed second in the triple jump with a tally of 11.57 meters/ 37 feet 11.50-inches.
The Green and White dominated in the pole vault as well, claiming both first and second. Senior Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio – Pandora-Gilboa) took home the gold in her signature event, clearing a mark of 3.80 meters/ 12 feet 5.50-inches, while Pollatz took silver with a vault of 3.65 meters/ 11 feet 11.75-inches.
In the throws, Eastern managed to take home gold in the javelin throw, as Coyne finished first with a throw of 37.27 meters/ 122 feet 3-inches, which was another career-best. Freshman Jada Taylor (Neptune, N.J. – Neptune) was the top Eagle in the shot put, posting a throw of 10.41 meters/ 34 feet 2-inches. In the discus, junior Megan Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio – Woodmoore) took the silver after finishing with a tally of 41.40 meters/ 135 feet 10-inches. She also took second in the hammer throw with a mark of 47.11 meters/ 154 feet 7-inches.
The Green and White continue the outdoor season next weekend in East Lansing, Mich., with the Spartan Invitational, April 8-9.
