The Eagles will close out the series tomorrow at 12 p.m.
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team returned to Mid-American Conference play Friday, April 1, at Varsity Field. Hosting the Bowling Green State University Falcons, the Eagles (12-19, 2-3) dropped both legs of a doubleheader, snapping a two-game league win streak. EMU fell 8-1 in the series opener before a comeback fell short in game two, as the Falcons (14-20, 2-3) took the second game 5-4.
Junior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) served as a bright spot in EMU's game one loss to the Falcons, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate, while a pair of Eagles hit homers in game two. Senior Aoife Duffy (Powell, Ohio-Olentangy Liberty) crushed her second homer of the season, while freshman Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) belted her team-leading sixth of the year.
In the circle, freshman Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) was credited with the loss in game one after allowing five runs on seven hits over six innings. Junior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) earned the start in game two, going four innings while surrendering three runs on seven hits.
Game #1: Bowling Green 8, Eastern Michigan 1
Miranda cruised through the first three innings of the series opener, holding the Falcons hitless and making way for the Eagles to take an early lead. After Miranda sent BGSU down in order in the top of the frame, the Eagles capitalized on a leadoff single to take a 1-0 edge. Sophomore Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) singled up the middle and was lifted for senior speedster, Elaine Whitbeck (Holland, Mich.-West Ottawa). Advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, Whitbeck cruised into third on a ground ball back to pitcher before a pitch in the dirt allowed her to slide home safely.
The third inning run proved to be all the offense the Eagles would muster despite several opportunities down the stretch.
The Falcons answered back, tallying a run in the fourth and adding runs in the sixth and seventh to take game one, 8-1.
Game #2: Bowling Green 5, Eastern Michigan 4
As they had in the first game, the Eagles soared to an early lead in the third inning. Senior Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange) led things off with a single up the middle and came around to score on freshman Olivia Logan's (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) RBI-knock.
EMU's one-run lead did not last long however, as the Falcons registered two runs on three hits in the fourth. Looking for more, BGSU loaded the bases with one out before Minsker and the Eastern Michigan defense locked in. Minsker fielded a ground ball in the circle and fired home to get the lead runner before ringing up the Falcons' final batter on three straight pitches to escape the frame.
Coming to the plate down 2-1, the Eagles could not muster any offense, leaving BGSU in front heading to the fifth inning.
A leadoff line drive homer to left field extended Bowling Green's lead to two, 3-1. The long ball was followed by a pair of free passes by Minsker, ending the junior hurler's day early. Entering the circle in relief, sophomore Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) inherited two on with no outs and the middle of BGSU's lineup coming to bat. Following a fly out, Trujillo gave up a single before retiring the next two batters to keep the Falcons from doing any further damage.
A bases-clearing double added two runs to Bowling Green's total, pushing its lead to 5-1. With the Falcons threatening to score more, Trujillo recorded her second strikeout of the game before inducing an inning-ending groundout.
The score stood 5-1 in favor of the visitors ahead of EMU's final turn at-bat at which point the Eagles' offense rallied. Pinch hitting in the nine-spot, Duffy belted a home run out and over the fence in left field. Duffy's long ball was followed by an infield single by senior Myranda Barnes (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Belleville). Back-to-back fielder's choice brought Akles to the plate with one on and two outs. Wasting little time, Akles crushed the first pitch of the at bat to straight away center field. Coming down on the top of the fence the ball bounced over for Akles' sixth homer of the year, chasing BGSU's starting pitcher. Following a first pitch strike, Kriegshauser took four consecutive pitches, drawing a walk and bringing the winning run to the plate. Olmos battled in the box, but a grounder back to the circle ended the Eagles comeback short, 5-4.
The Eagles look to bounce back tomorrow, April 2, in the series finale. First pitch has been moved up to 12 p.m. to avoid inclement weather.
