The announcement comes ahead of EMU's MAC Tournament game versus Kent State
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University women's basketball junior guards Cha Sweeney (Toledo, Ohio-Rogers) and Janay Morton (Brooklyn Park, Minn.-Osseo) were named to the 2016 All-Mid-American Conference teams, the league office announced Monday, March 7. The All-MAC teams are voted on by the league's head coaches.
Sweeney earned second team honors for the third consecutive season. Meanwhile Morton reeled in her first postseason honors since being named to the MAC All-Freshmen Team at the end of the 2013-14 campaign, earning a spot on both the All-MAC Third Team as well as the first-ever All-MAC Defensive Team.
The 5-foot-2 guard led the Eagles in scoring (17.9 ppg) which ranked as the fifth most in the MAC, highlighted by 11 occasions in which she scored 20 points or more. In addition to her stellar scoring effort, the Toledo, Ohio native also led the Green and White in assists (4.0 apg), which was sixth-best in the league, while also placing third with 1.9 steals per contest. Sweeney ranked fifth in free throw percentage, knocking down 82.7 percent of her shots from the charity stripe this season while she is 10th in the league with a 1.3 assist-to-turnover ratio and 11th in three-point field goals made (59).
In the midst of the best season of her career, Morton is second on the team in scoring. Averaging 13.2 points per contest, the Brooklyn Park, Minn. product led the Green and White in steals (2.8 spg). Her 82 thefts rank 19th nationally while also tying the fifth-most in EMU history. One of five players to earn a slot on the first-ever All-MAC Defensive Team, Morton recorded at least one steal in every game this season. She swiped a career-high seven against Texas Rio Grande Valley earlier this year while tallying six thefts on three different occasions. Morton also ranked 10th in the league in free throw percentage (78.9) and three-pointers made (57), she was 11th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.2) and 13th in assists per game (3.1) and three-point field goal percentage (34.3).
Additionally, Morton became the 20th player in EMU history to reach the 1,000-point club. The junior guard broke the barrier, Dec. 10, in the Eagles' win over Monmouth.
The Eagles begin their postseason schedule tonight as the sixth-seeded team in the MAC Women's Basketball Tournament. The Green and White host 11th-seeded Kent State University in the first leg of a doubleheader at the Convocation Center. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. with the EMU men's basketball team tangling with the University of Toledo at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The winner advances to play No. 3 Ball State University Wednesday, March 9, at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Tipoff for the second round contest is scheduled for approximately 7:30 p.m.
