YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling completed competition at the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championships, Sunday afternoon, March 6.  It was a successful day for the team, as they qualified three wrestlers for the NCAA tournament, and placed six overall, the most for EMU since 2012.

Eastern had one wrestler in a championship bout, redshirt freshman Dakota Juarez (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven).  He had the tall task of facing the No. 1 seed Daniel Lewis of Missouri, who is ranked No. 5 in the country.  Juarez was ridden almost the entire match, only getting one takedown, and dropping his match by decision, 8-3.  He had already locked up his automatic bid into NCAA's in yesterday's action.

The two other Eagles to earn automatic bids to the NCAA's were redshirt junior Nicholas Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edwards) at 149 lbs. and redshirt senior Anthony Abro (Canton, Mich.-Canton) at 197 lbs.  It was the first in the career of Barber and the second straight for Abro.

Barber found himself down 2-1 in the third period of his consolation semifinal match against No.3 seeded and No. 10 nationally Alex Richardson.  He notched takedown but got reversed, to be down 4-3 with less than a minute to go.  Barber reversed him to get the 5-4 lead back and went on to win 6-4 with riding time.  The win avenged his loss to Richardson earlier in the dual season, and clinched his way to the national tournament.  He went on to take third place at 149 lbs. where he won his consolation final on a medical forfeit.

Abro's consolation semifinal was a tight one with only one escape each into the third.  A scramble resulted in a quick takedown and reverse, making things 3-3 midway through the period.  Benjamin of Buffalo got an escape and held the one-point lead late in the third.  Abro busted through though, getting a late takedown and riding out the match for the 5-4 decision, locking up the automatic bid.

In the third-place match, Abro rematched with Scott of NIU and had another tight bout.  The match went to overtime tied at one, but Scott notched a takedown with onesecond remaining for the victory.  Abro finished with the fourth place seed at 197 lbs.

The three other three placers for Eastern today were 133 pounder Shayne Wireman (Lansing, Mich.-Holt), 174 pounder Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edwards)and heavyweight Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan).

Hutchison rematched with Nye of Kent State in the third place match.  The Golden Flash grappler got the better of Hutchison again, ending his weekend with a fourth-place finish.  Davis meanwhile secured sixth-place after dropping his only two matches of the day.  Wireman took sixth after not wrestling again, forfeiting two matches due to an injury.

As a team, Eastern notched 12 wins and placed eighth overall with 54.5 points.

Juarez, Barber, and Abro now head to Madison Square Garden in New York City for the 2016 NCAA Championships.  The three-day tournament begins Thursday, March 17.  Additional wrestlers from EMU may reach the championships from at-large bids that will be announced Wednesday, March 9.
