YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team wrapped up the first day of competition at the Mid-American Conference Championships at the Convocation Center Saturday, March 5.  The day was highlighted by redshirt freshman Dakota Juarez (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven) who won his only two bouts of the day to advance to the 165 lbs. finals and earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Championships.

Juarez is the first Eagle to advance to a final since Jared Germaine did so at 125 lbs. in 2013.  He is the second EMU grappler to advance to a final at 165 lbs. in program history, the first since J.J. Holmes won 165 lbs. in 2004, and his advancement to the NCAA Tournament makes him the 51st such wrestler in EMU history.

In all, EMU will have five wrestlers continue into the second day of competition.  They totaled up eight wins on the day and currently sit in eighth place as a team with 40 points.

The 165 pounder Juarez, who was ranked No. 6 in the tournament, got his day started by defeating the No. 3 seeded Austin Reese, his second victory over the OU grappler this season, by a 3-2 decision.  He followed that up in the semifinals with a thrilling 4-3 upset decision over No. 2 seeded and No. 17 nationally ranked Cooper Moore by another close decision, 4-3.  The two wins catapulted him into the finals to be held Sunday afternoon.

Elsewhere, No. 24 redshirt senior Anthony Abro (Canton, Mich.-Canton), who was the No. 5 seed, won his first bout of the day to advance into the semifinals.  The win came over Northern Illinois' No. 20 nationally ranked Shawn Scott, avenging his dual loss from earlier in the season, defeating him by 4-3 decision on a late takedown.  It was also his 90th career victory for EMU.  Abro was felled in the semis though by the No. 1 seeded and No. 2 nationally ranked J'den Cox of Missouri by fall in 6:37.  He currently sits in the consolation semifinals and will need one more win tomorrow to advance to his second straight NCAA tournament.

The third Eagle to get to the semifinals was junior Shayne Wireman (Lansing, Mich.-Holt) when he upset the No. 2 seeded and No. 16 nationally ranked Zach Synon of Missouri by 3-1 decision.  Unfortunately, Wireman would be knocked from the tournament in the next round by injury default, ending his chance for an NCAA bid.

Eastern also advanced three wrestlers who lost in their first round into day two in the consolation bracket.  Two of the wrestlers will have a chance for an automatic bid into the NCAA's.

At 149 lbs, No 5 seeded and No. 23 nationally ranked redshirt junior Nicholas Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St Edwards) was upended in his first bout by No. 4 seeded and No. 19 nationally ranked Mike DePalma of Kent State, but rebounded nicely in the consolation round, polishing off a 12-2 major decision win to get to the consolation semifinals.  Barber will also need at least one more win to get to his first ever NCAA championships.

The other EMU wrestler with a chance at an automatic bid is 174 pounder No. 33 nationally ranked redshirt junior Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edwards).  Coming into the tournament as the No. 5 seed, Davis dropped his first bout to the No. 4 seed by 4-0 decision.  He came back in the consolation rounds though, scoring an 8-3 decision to get to the consolation semifinals.  Davis will need to win out and clinch third place to receive an automatic bid.

The final Eagle in action tomorrow will be redshirt sophomore Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan), who will not have a chance at an auto bid with the MAC only being allocated one spot.  The heavyweight dropped his first match of the night, but came back to notch two wins in the consolation rounds to get to the consolation semi-finals.

The action from the Convo gets back underway tomorrow at noon tomorrow with the continuation of the consolation rounds.  The championships at each weight class will begin at 1:20 p.m.
