The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team turned in the top preliminary time in three of four events in Saturday's morning session of the Mid-American Confernece Championships, March 5. The Eagles will head into the final session of the championships with 12 swimmers set to compete in championship heats and four divers in the finals.

The Eagles opened the day with a dominating performance in the 200 Backstroke, qualifying five swimmers for the championship heat. Junior Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) turned in the second fastest time in Eastern laurels (1:44.59) to earn the top seed in the final heat. Bateman was followed by senior Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet) and freshman Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) who claimed the second and third seed, respectively. Junior Chris Cutter (Fishers, Ind.-Fishers) and freshman Ricky Perez rounded out the Eagles incredible all-around showing, earning the sixth and seventh seeds in tonight's finals. The Green and White will make up more than half of the field in the championship heat.

Hot off the heels of a 200 Freestyle MAC Championship, senior Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) touched in with a school record, 43.35, in the 100 Free. Henry will be joined in the final by freshman Jake Tyson (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Northgate) who clocked in with a career-best time of 44.57. Tyson's personal-best ranks seventh in EMU annals, just one hundreth of a second off of the sixth-ranked time.

Eastern qualified two more for Saturday night's championships in the 200 Breast as senior Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) and junior Kyle Aerne (Lake Villa, Ill.-Lakes) recorded the seventh and eighth fastest prelim times, respectively.

The session came to a close with another impressive performance by the Eagles. Eastern registered the top-two times in preliminaries with senior Krzysztof Gilski (Dywity, Poland-Adam Mickiewicz Secondary School) pacing the Green and White. Gilski touched in with a time of 1:47.25, less than one tenth of a second ahead of sophomore Logan Burton's (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) time of 1:47.32. Junior Marcin Rzyski (Olsztyn, Poland-Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace #4) will join the Eagles' duo in the finals while sophomore Connor Johnson (Fort Bragg, N.C.-Terry Sanford) earned a lane in the consolation race.
With an 89-point lead in the team standings, the Eagles will close out the conference meet tomorrow, March 5, with hopes of locking up their 33rd MAC Championship. The final championship heats get underway at 7:10 p.m. with the final heat of the 1650 Freestyle.
