YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team qualified all 17 Eagles that took part in prelims for the evening session Friday, March 4, with 13 set to swim in tonight's championship heats.
The day opened with four heats of the 400 Individual Medley featuring a pair of Eagles. Junior Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.) used a strong freestyle leg to touch in fourth in his heat with a career-best time of 3:55.12 to earn the sixth-seeded time in tonight's finals. His time also ranks 10th all-time in program history. Freshman Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) rounded out the Eagles in the event, clocking in at 3:57.87. With a career-best time, Kawaguchi turned in the 11th best time in prelims, giving him a lane in the consolation finals.
The Green and White then landed all four swimmers in the 100 Butterfly finals. Sophomore Logan Burton (Chesapeaka, Va.-Hickory) narrowly missed the NCAA 'B' cut time, finishing in 48.39. The fourth fastest time in prelims, Burton was followed by senior Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet) who claimed fifth while sophomore Connor Johnson (Fort Bragg, N.C.-Terry Sanford) and senior Krzysztof Gilski (Dywity, Poland-Adam Mickiewicz State Secondary) finished seventh and eighth, respectively. EMU will make up half of the field in this evening's championship heat as all four swimmers finished inside the top-eight.
Eastern followed up the 100 Fly by qualifying three swimmers for the 200 Freestyle championship heat. Senior Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) clocked in with the fastest time of the prelims to take the top-seed into the finals while a pair of freshman turned in career-best performances to move into the finals. Jake Tyson (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Northgate) touched in with the fourth fastest time in EMU laurels and the third fastest in the prelims ahead of tonight's heat while fellow freshman Jean Francois Murphy's (Montreal, Quebec-Sainte Anne) career-best 1:38.50 ranks sixth in program history.
Moving to the 100 Breaststroke, the Eagles posted a pair of top-10 finishes. Junior Kyle Aerne (Lake Villa, Ill.-Lakes) touched in with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 54.88 and is the fifth-seed in the championship heat. Senior Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) also turned in a NCAA 'B' cut time (55.20), ranking 10th in prelims. Finishing just outside the top-eight, Hodges will take part in the consolation finals.
The Eagles closed out the swim events with a splash, posting six career-bests led by junior Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson). Bateman clocked in with the fastest time of the prelims (48.02) and second-fastest race in EMU annals. Gissen, Burton, and Kawaguchi's prelim times ranked third, fifth, and seventh, respectively, allowing the trio to join Bateman in the championship heat. Freshman Ricky Perez clocked in at 50.18, the 10th fastest in prelims giving him a lane in the consolation finals. Junior Erik Brinkhoff (Bethel Park, Pa.-Bethel Park) rounded out the finishers for the Green and White, tying for 16th. Clocking in with a time of 50.43, Brinkhoff tied Buffalo's Jon Ekas, forcing a swim off for the final slot in the 'B' final. In the swim-off, Brinkhoff and Ekas went stroke-for-stroke through the first three quarters of the race before Brinkhoff gained a lead and edged out his UB counterpart for the final lane this evening.
Diving prelims for the 3-meter are slated to take place this afternoon before the teams compete in the consolation and championship heats this evening. Session VII is set to begin at 7 p.m. in Jones Natatorium.
