KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team dropped a tough road meet to Kent State today, March 4. The Eagles finished with a 194.025, while the Golden Flashes notched a 195.025.
"I thought the girls did a good job through three, and I thought that their energy was really good," remarked Head Coach Jay Santos. "Even when beam was happening, I thought that the energy was good and they tried to stay positive, but I really think they lost their focus. I don't know if it was the environment since it was really loud. I don't know what it was, but we got really tight, really fast. We got very tentative and it went downhill in a hurry."
Beginning the day on bars, junior Sydney McEachern (Winnipeg, Manitoba – Kelvin) got the team off to a great start with a solid routine, earning a 9.725. Following her, fellow junior Lacey Rubin (Plainview, N.Y. – Plainview Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) posted a 9.75. Additionally, sophomore Catie Conrad (Brighton, Mich. – Brighton) finished with a 9.75 as well. However, sophomore Kendall Valentin (Holmdel, N.J. – Holmdel) stole the show, sticking her dismount and scoring a huge 9.875. The Eagles led the Golden Flashes following one rotation, 48.800 – 48.675.
Senior Kimberly Ebeyer (Greenwood, Ind. – Whiteland Community) began the rotation, taking just a small step on her vault and earning a 9.725. From there, freshman Ciara Gresham (Shiloh, Ill. – Belleville) had a great start to her vault career as an Eagle, scoring a 9.70. The sophomore duo of Conrad and Rachel Slocum (Holly Springs, N.C. – Holly Springs) chipped in a 9.725 and a 9.775, respectively, after which Valentin closed the rotation with a 9.80. Eastern ultimately finished with a 48.725 on the event, and held their lead over Kent State, 97.525 – 96.775.
The Eagles were very consistent on floor, as four competitors scored a 9.8. Junior Natalie Gervais (Winnipeg, Manitoba – Sturgeon Heights) got things rolling with a 9.725, while Conrad followed with a 9.75. From there, the streak of 9.8's began with Gresham notching a career-best 9.8 with her powerful tumbling. McEachern and Ebeyer both notched 9.8's as well with great routines, while Slocum closed it out in the anchor position with a great routine. Scoring a 48.95 on the event, the Green and White maintained their lead heading into the last rotation, 146.475 – 145.775.
Although Ebeyer got the team off to a good start with a 9.75, the Eagles encountered some adversity in the following routines. After a pair of hiccups, Gervais got the Green and White back on track with a 9.7. From there, Conrad closed out the meet on a high-note, scoring a career-high 9.875 following a great routine. With all four events completed, the Eagles fell to the Golden Flashes, 195.025 – 194.025.
The Green and White will conclude the regular season at home, hosting a tri-meet against Central Michigan and Southeast Missouri State, Thurdsay, March 10, which is also Senior Night. The following week, the Eagles will travel to Muncie, Ind. for the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championships.
