After playing 27 games on the road to open the season, the Eastern Michigan University softball team hosted the University of Detroit Mercy in non-conference action Tuesday, March 29, at Varsity Field. The Eagles (12-17, 2-1 MAC) bounced back from a heartbreaking, 5-4, 10 inning loss in game one to take game two, 4-3.

Game #1: Detroit 5, Eastern Michigan 4
Sophomore Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) earned the starting nod in game one, but lasted just 1.1 innings as the Titans touched her up for three runs early. Freshman Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) appeared in relief, tossing a career-high 8.2 innings. Miranda surrendered two runs on nine hits while striking out three, but was ultimately credited with the loss, dropping her record to 5-11 on the season.

Four Eagles tallied multi-hit performances, led by freshman Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) and senior Aoife Duffy (Powell, Ohio-Olentangy Liberty). Akles finished the game 3-for-6 at the dish, while Duffy went 2-for-4. Senior Myranda Barnes (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Belleville) and junior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) added two hits apiece in the loss.

Hits finished even with each team recording 13 in the extra-inning contest. The Eagles tied a season-high with 13 hits, but four defensive miscues plagued the Eagles.

With offenses rolling, neither starter lasted more than two innings, forcing teams to go to the bullpens early in game one. Miranda entered in relief, spelling Trujillo in the second inning, and inheriting the bases loaded with one out. Toeing the rubber, Miranda induced a pair of ground outs before a fly out to left field ended the frame.

Trailing 3-1, Duffy doubled before being lifted for senior speedster Elaine Whitbeck (Holland, Mich.-West Ottawa). With speed on first and two out, sophomore Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) ripped a single to left, scoring Whitbeck to pull EMU within one, 3-2.

The Titans tacked on one more in the third, extending their lead to 4-2, but EMU leveled the score with runs in the third and fifth innings. Kriegshauser cut the deficit to one with a RBI-double in the third before senior Mady Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) added one of her own in the fifth to knot the score at four.

Hostetler's RBI-double proved to be the exception as the two squad's benefited from quality relief outings in the circle. The duo of Christa McGahuey and Ashley Mauser allowed just one run on five hits over the final eight innings for the Titans while Miranda surrendered two runs for the Green and White.

Despite the strong effort from Miranda, 16 runners left on base by the Eagles came back to bite them. Eastern put six on over the course of the final four frames, but failed to bring any across home plate, eventually falling, 5-4, in the 10th following a RBI-single by Detroit.

Game #2: Detroit 3, Eastern Michigan 4
Eastern Michigan outhit Detroit, 7-5, in game two, led by Kriegshauser The junior power hitter finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and two RBIs. Freshman Lucy Lopez (Ventura, Calif.-Stockdale) also registered a multi-hit game, tallying two hits in four at bats to go along with a RBI.

EMU's offensive effort was overshadowed by a career day in the circle by junior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland). Pitching her fifth career complete game on her birthday, Minsker struck out a career-best seven over 7.0 innings of work while giving up three runs on five hits.

Detroit plated a run in the second despite a hot start in the circle by Minsker. The Howell, Mich. product fanned three of the first five batters she faced before the Titans pushed a run across on an RBI-single to take the early lead.

Battling at the plate, senior Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) fought off three pitches before drawing a one out walk. With ball four bouncing in the dirt and escaping towards the backstop, Lopez slid safely into home to even the score at one. Kriegshauser capped the inning, lacing a double down the left field line to score two.

Eastern added a run in the next inning, capitalizing on a Titan miscue. A two-out single by Lopez brought in sophomore Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) who had previously reached on a dropped liner. The RBI-single pushed EMU's lead to three, 4-1.

Looking to cut into the Eagles lead, the Titans attempted to swipe second after drawing a leadoff walk, but freshman Sam Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt) gunned out the runner before Minsker registered her seventh strikeout of the game.

A trio of groundouts in the top of the seventh gift wrapped Minsker's birthday present in the form of her fifth win of the season, 4-3.

The Eagles continue a six-game home stand Friday, April 1, when they take on Bowling Green State University. EMU's Mid-American Conference battle with the Falcons is slated to begin at 3 p.m. at Varsity Field.
