The Academic All-MAC honor is for student-athletes who have excelled both in athletics and academics. In order to qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award.
The Eagles had two from the sprints and hurdles group represented. Carter, who primarily participated in the 60m hurdles throughout the season, finished seventh at the Indoor MAC Championships, Feb. 26-27. She also took second in the event at the EMU Triangular, Jan. 23. Additionally, McKinney was a regular contributor in the 60m and the 200m, consistently taking home top-five finishes. At the conference championships, she took sixth in both the 60m and the 200m, while also running a leg in the fourth-place 4x400m relay team. In total, the senior nabbed 10 top-five finishes throughout the indoor season.
In the mid-distance events, the Green and White had four runners earn the honor. Branham consistently ran in the 800m and the 4x400m relay for Eastern, with her top individual finish coming at the Eubanks Open, Jan. 15, where she took second in the 800m. Cizmas, an All-MAC First Team honoree, ran in both the 800m and the mile, as well as part of the distance medley relay. She took second in the mile at the GVSU Tune Up, Feb. 19, along with running a leg of the winning D.M.R. group at the conference championships. Mesa, who also ran in the 800m throughout the year, had her top finish at the GVSU Tune Up, coming in third in the 800m. Finally, Quaintance contributed in the same two events as well. The senior came in first in the 800m at the GVSU Tune Up, edging out two of her teammates.
EMU also had four distance runners recognized for success in the classroom. Frauhammer primarily ran in the 3000m and the 5000m for the Eagles, finishing second in the former at the EMU Triangular. Gallein, who ran in both the mile and the 3000m, nabbed second in both events at the MAC Championships, along with helping the D.M.R. group to a first-place finish to earn First Team All-MAC honors. Knoll, in her first competitive season with the Eagles, ran in the 3000m and the 5000m, placing fifth at the EMU Triangular in the 3000m. Finally, McDermitt, a First Team All-MAC honoree, had a fantastic season for the Green and White, winning the 3000m at the MAC Championships. The sophomore finished within the top-eight of every event she ran in, including eight top-five finishes.
Finally, EMU had three athletes from field events earn the honor as well. Dreimane, who led the Eagles in the long jump and the triple jump, took home bronze in the latter at the conference championships. The sophomore also won both events at the EMU Triangular to go along with eight top-four finishes on the year. Additionally, Pendleton contributed in the shot put and the weight throw for Eastern, turning in a career-best mark of 14.58 meters/ 47 feet 10-inches in the weight throw at the GVSU Tune Up. Finally, Uy primarily competed in the pole vault, nabbing sixth at the conference championships with a mark of 3.85 meters/ 12 feet 7.5-inches. She also took third in the event twice throughout the season.
The Eagles begin the outdoor season this weekend with a meet hosted by Western Michigan, April1. The Green and White will also send a select number of athletes to the Stanford Invitational, April 1-2, out in Palo Alto, Calif.
