Akles is the second Eagle to earn a conference award this season
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Following a weekend in which she etched her name into the record books, freshman third baseman Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) was named Mid-American Conference West Division Co-Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday, March 28. The award marks the first of the career for Akles, and the second time this season an Eagle has been honored by the league office.
Akles fueled the Eagles to a 2-2 record for the week and the program's first conference series win since 2013. Finishing the week 8-of-12 at the dish, Akles boasted a batting average of .667 for the period along with an impressive 1.333 slugging percentage. The La Habra, Calif. native added 11 RBIs and two runs through the four-game span.
Her best game of the week came in EMU's second tilt with Akron, March 26. Going 4-for-4 at the plate, Akles registered the second-most hits in a single game in program history. Her four-hit effort came way of two homers, a double, and a single, leaving her a triple shy of the cycle. With two home runs in the game, Akles accomplished the feat for the second time this season becoming the fourth player in EMU history to do so. Additionally, Akles registered a program record seven RBIs in the contest.
With Monday's announcement, Akles joins teammate Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) as the second Eagle to receive a conference award this season. The two awardwinners marks the most by Eastern Michigan since Amanda Stanton garnered the honor twice during the 2013 campaign.
Akles and the Eagles return to the diamond tomorrow, March 29. Playing at Varsity Field for the first time this season, the Green and White will host the Detroit Titans in non-conference action. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
