Freshman Olivia Logan went 2-for-3 on the day with a home run
AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team opened Mid-American Conference play Friday, March 25, at Lee R. Jackson Softball Field versus the Zips of the University of Akron. The Eagles (9-16, 0-1 MAC) benefited from an early home run but were eventually outlasted, 4-3, by the Zips (15-13, 1-0), as errors plagued the Green and White.
Freshman Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) belted her first career home run in the loss, finishing 2-for-3 on the day with two RBIs while freshman Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) pitched a complete game in the circle. Miranda allowed two earned runs over six innings on nine hits. Additionally, the righty hurler tallied four strikeouts without giving up a walk.
As a team, the Eagles were outhit 9-7 with three errors to Akron's zero.
Freshman Lucy Lopez (Ventura, Calif.-Stockdale) broke the seal with a leadoff single in the top of the first. Using her speed, Lopez beat out the throw from third, giving EMU the first base runner of the game. Lopez's speed on the bases gave the Green and White a threat but Logan did not leave her much time to display it. Down in the count, Logan crushed the 0-1 delivery over the fence for her the first homer of her career. Leading 2-0 after Logan's long ball, senior Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) recorded the Eagles' third consecutive hit to open the game before a double play and a ground out sent Eastern Michigan to the field.
A pair of singles put two on for Akron in the bottom of the first but Miranda stranded them, fanning the final batter to preserve EMU's 2-0 lead with her team coming back to the plate.
After the Zips executed a double steal in the third, cutting EMU's edge to one, 2-1, UA's Cassie Gillepsie led off the bottom half of the fifth with a solo shot, knotting the score at two. UA added another run in the frame, capitalizing on a dropped ball in the outfield. With a runner standing on second after the error, a single through the right side gave the Zips their first lead of the day, 3-2.
The Zips tacked on one more in the sixth, leaving the Eagles with three outs to overcome a two-run deficit. After back-to-back two-out singles by senior Myranda Barnes (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Belleville) and Logan put runners on the corners for Clark, a wild pitch moved the tying run to second and scored Barnes. One run away from evening the score, a groundout to the shortstop sealed the 4-3 loss.
Eastern closes out the three-game series with the Zips tomorrow, March 26, with a doubleheader at Lee R. Jackson Softball Field. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
