Men's Track and Field Places 17 on Academic All-MAC Team

Eagles tie for third in the Mid-American Conference with six selections

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team placed 17 on the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team for the indoor season, announced today, March 21, by the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles led the conference with 17 student-athletes earning the honor.
The Green and White's selections for the team include: Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland - Mountain Ridge), Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven), Scott Bradley (Battle Creek, Mich. - Lakeview), Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa. - Greater Latrobe Senior), Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio - Maumee), Elijah Albert-Grayer (Canton, Mich. - Salem), Mike Hierholzer (Medina, Ohio - Medina), John Knox (Gloversville, N.Y. - Gloversville), Mitch Lenneman (River Falls, Wis. - River Falls), Quinn Levering (Caledonia, Ohio - River Valley), Zach Purcilly (Troy, Mich. - Avondale), Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. - Mason), Solomon Simmons (Murrieta, Calif. - Murrieta Valley), Mason Waynes (Kenosha, Wis. - Bradford), Andrew Wentz (Napoleon, Ohio - Napoleon), Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill. - Williamsville), and Matthew Williams (Moreno Valley, Calif. - Vista Del Lago).
The Academic All-MAC honor is for student-athletes who have excelled both in athletics and academics. In order to qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award.
The distance group had an outstanding indoor season, with Fink qualifying to the NCAA Championships, March 11-12, in the 3000m. In addition to earning Second Team All-American honors, he also was named First Team All-MAC after winning both the 3000m and the 5000m at the conference championship, Feb. 26-27. Additionally, Andresson earned Second Team All-MAC accolades after placing second in the 5000m at the MAC Championship. Also taking home Second Team All-MAC honors, Lenneman managed to post a second-place finish in the 3000m at the MAC Championship as well. Bouchikhi turned in a great conference championship performance, nabbing third in both the 3000m and the 5000m. Finally, Knox was also a regular for the Eagles, with his top finish of the season coming at the GVSU Big Meet, Feb. 12, where he took ninth in the 3000m.
The Green and White also had a pair of mid-distance runners post a solid season. Bradley was named Second Team All-MAC after taking silver in the 800m at the conference championship, while Raymond ran in the mile throughout the season, placing sixth at the MAC championship.
EMU also placed a number of sprinters and hurdlers on the team. Elam, who was also a Second Team All-MAC honoree, ran a leg in the 4x400m relay group at the conference championship that finished runner-up, along with regularly turning in top-three performances throughout the year. In addition, Waynes, who also ran a leg in the conference runner-up 4x400m relay group, was named All-MAC Second Team. Finally, Matthew Williams regularly ran in the 200m and the 400m during the season. Williams was also an All-MAC Second Team honoree for his part in the 4x400m relay team as well.
Additionally, the throwers had a fantastic season. Keith Williams was one of the team's top throwers throughout the season, as he finished with the eighth-best shot put in EMU history at the MAC Championship, along with the second-best weight throw mark. Albert-Grayer competed in the weight throw on five separate occasions, with his top finish coming at the Findlay Indoor Open & Elite Throws Competition, Feb. 12, where he took third. Hierholzer also competed in five meets during the indoor season, primarily in the shot put. He nabbed second at the Findlay Oiler Opener, Dec. 4, also taking silver at the Findlay Indoor Open & Elite Throws Competition, Feb. 12. Levering took home the shot put title at both the Oiler Opener and the EMU Triangular, Jan. 23. Purcilly, in his first season competing for the Eagles, participated in both the shot put and the weight throw, with his best finish coming at the EMU Triangular, where he took fourth in the shot put. Finally, Wentz's best meet of the season came at the Findlay Oiler Opener, in which he took fourth in the weight throw.
Finally, Simmons paced the Eagles in the multis, as he took home the MAC title in the heptathlon after posting a program record 5608 points. In addition to earning First Team All-MAC honors, Simmons regularly posted top-three finishes throughout the year, ultimately winning a total of seven events during the indoor season.
The Eagles lift the lid on the outdoor season this week, March 25-26, with the Raleigh Relays. A limited number of student-athletes will make the trip to Raleigh, N.C., before the rest of the team returns to action the following weekend, March 31- April 1, with the Florida Relays and the Stanford Invitational.
