Eagles of the Week Presented by EMU Financial

Each week two Eagles will be honored for their success on the field

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Each week, the Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics names the EMU Financial's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic media relations department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are men's golfer Kyle Rodes and gymnast Rachel Slocum.

Week's Achievements:  Rodes continued his success with a 68 on Saturday, March 19, at Desert Shootout to finish in a tie for seventh with a 10-under 206 (68-70-68). The total is tied for the best three-round score in program history. Korey Mahoney also shot a 206 (71-65-70) at the Marshall Invitational, April 8, 2005. For Rhodes, it was of course a career best tally on the weekend as he picked up his second career top-10 finish. Overall, numerous records fell on the day as the Eagles finished behind tournament champion Iowa State University, which posted a 41-under par 823 (276-275-272). Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's crew fired a final round 16-under 272 to finish in fifth-place with a two-day tally of 839 (284-283-272). EMU's 54-hole score shattered the program's previous record of 855 (287-288-280) set at the Xaiver Invitational, Oct. 14-15, 2002, while the team's final round mark of 272 was one stroke ahead of its previous single round standard of 273 set at the Georgetown Intercollegiate, Oct. 18, 2010.

Week's Achievements: Slocum led the Eagles to their second ever Mid-American Conference Championship this past weekend, March 19. Scoring a 196.425, Slocum and the Eagles were the only squad to score above 196, while also posting the team's second-best score in school history. The sophomore, who competed on both vault and floor, took home top-three finishes on both events. On vault, Slocum scored a 9.85 to tie for second-place, while she took home a share of the bronze on floor after posting a career-best 9.9. At the conclusion of the meet, the Holly Springs, N.C. native was named MAC Specialist of the Year, in addition to earning a spot on the 2016 All-Tournament Team. Throughout the season, Slocum anchored both the vault and the floor lineups, helping the Green and White to their first NCAA Regionals berth in school history.
