The Green and White were outhit 11-2
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Facing its tallest task so far this season, the Eastern Michigan University softball team made the short trip to Alumni Field to take on the second-ranked Wolverines of the University of Michigan Wednesday, March 16. No. 2 Michigan (21-2) proved to be too much for the Eagles (7-11) to handle as the Green and White fell, 14-1, in the battle of Washtenaw County.
Freshman Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) earned the nod in the circle. Pitching 2.1 innings, Miranda allowed eight runs on five hits, dropping her season record to 3-7.
At the plate, junior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) helped the Eagles avoid the shutout. Going 1-for-2 at the plate, Kriegshauser crushed her third homerun of the season and the second of her career at Alumni Field.
Miranda battled back against UM's leadoff batter to induce a fly ball to centerfield where senior Mady Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) tracked it down for out number one. With one down, Miranda fell behind in the count and eventually walked back-to-back batters, putting two on for Kelsey Susalla. With the wind blowing out towards center, Susalla belted a full-count pitch over the fence to give the home team a 3-0 lead. UM's next batter reached on a ball off the fence before being stranded on third as sophomore Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) fielded a grounder and fired over to freshman Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview), closing the book on the opening frame.
Stepping to the plate with one out, Kriegshauser blasted a shot well over the centerfield fence, eventually coming down in centerfield of UM's baseball stadium. The long ball off the bat of Kriegshauser, her third of the season, pulled EMU within two, 3-1.
After a RBI-single up the middle, a walk loaded the bases for the Maize and Blue with one out. UM's Susalla hammered a ball down the first base line but a diving play by Logan at first limited the damage as the Wolverines moved their lead to 5-1. The Eagles retired UM thanks to the quick reactions of freshman Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) at third base.
Michigan pushed its lead to eight, 9-1, in the third following a quick top half of the inning by the Green and White. UM recorded its third homerun of the afternoon before a double to right-center ended Miranda's day prematurely. Junior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) entered in relief.
Logan registered the Eagles' second hit of the contest to leadoff the fourth, driving a stand-up double down the first base line. Despite the two-bagger by Logan, EMU stranded the Riverview, Mich. native on third.
The Wolverines added four runs off of Minsker and sophomore Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) in the fourth to push their lead to 13-1, opening the door for Miranda's return. Coming in, inheriting bases loaded, Miranda threw out two runners at the plate before inducing an inning-ending groundout.
Eastern Michigan went down in order in the top of the fifth, ending the game 14-1, in favor of the home team.
The Eagles travel back south this weekend, March 18-20, for the College of Charleston Tournament. There, the Green and White will face off against five different opponents. EMU opens the weekend against Brown, March 18, with first pitch slated for 3:30 p.m.
