Eagles Split with Morehead State

Amanda Akles hit her team-leading third home run in game two

MOREHEAD, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team bounced back from a 13-7 loss at the hands of Morehead State University in game one to take game two, 8-5, securing a split with MSU (9-8), March 12.

Game #1: Eastern Michigan 5, Morehead State 13
In the circle, freshman Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) was credited with the game one loss, dropping her record to 3-6 on the season.

Sophomore Haley Hostetler (Woodlan, Ind.-New Haven) provided the Eagles with a bright spot at the dish in game one, going 3-for-3 with a double and a RBI. The shortstop's effort at the plate marked the second time this season she finished a game perfect at the plate and the fifth multi-hit game of the season for the Woodlan, Ind. native.

With the Eagles looking to chip away at a 4-0 deficit, freshman Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) opened the third frame with a walk. Moving into third with a pair of groundouts to the right side, Logan came around to score on a two-out RBI-single by junior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central). Freshman Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) kept the inning alive, reaching on an error. The MSU miscue allowed Kriegshauser to reach third on the play with senior Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) coming to the plate. Clark drove a pitch to centerfield, bringing in Kriegshauser but a spot-on throw from MSU's centerfielder to second beat Akles to the bag, ending EMU's rally.

Morehead State pushed its lead from two to five in the bottom half of the inning to hold a 7-2 edge through three innings of play.

Eastern cut into the deficit, scoring two in the fourth and one in the fifth, to pull within two. In their half of the fourth, Haley Hostetler and senior Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Liberty) delivered RBI-singles. After a 1-2-3 inning in the circle for sophomore Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California), the Eagles pushed another run across the plate. Senior Mady Hostetler's (Woodlan, Ind.-New Haven) deep fly ball allowed freshman Sam Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt) to tag from third. The sacrifice fly brought the score to 7-5 in favor of the home team.

Unfortunately for the Green and White that was as close as it would get as Morehead State went on to score six runs over the final three innings to take game one 13-5.

Game #2: Eastern Michigan 8, Morehead State 5
Going the distance, junior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) recorded her second win of the season. Tying a career-high with 7.0 innings of work, Minsker allowed five runs on nine hits while fanning two.

At the plate Akles led the way, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a homerun. Mady Hostetler also recorded a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 and driving in two.

Eastern wasted little time getting on the board in game two, plating two in its first at bats. Akles crushed her team-leading third home run of the season with freshman Lucy Lopez (Ventura, Calif.-Stockdale) on second after leading the game off with a double. A two-run shot, Akles' homer put the Eagles in front 2-0.

Morehead State responded in the bottom half of the inning, but the Eagles tacked on two more in the top of the second. A two-out single by sophomore Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) drove in Lopez and senior Myranda Barnes (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Belleville), extending EMU's lead to 4-1.

The Hostetler sisters manufactured another pair of runs in the third, moving Eastern's lead to five. First, Haley Hostetler doubled to score junior Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown). With her younger sister standing on second, Mady Hostetler stepped to the plate and drove a pitch into the outfield, moving the score to 6-1.

A two-run home run in the third and a two-run single in fifth brought Morehead State within one, 6-5, but the Eagles refused to relinquish the lead.

Davidson and Mady Hostetler provided the Eagles with a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh, pushing EMU's lead to three, 8-5, with Morehead State down to three outs. After the first two batters reached safely, Minsker buckled down and pitched her way out of the jam. With the 7-8-9 hitters coming to the plate, Minsker induced two infield flies before the Howell, Mich. native fielded a grounder to the circle and tossed over to first, securing the 8-5 victory.

The Eagles now turn their focus to a midweek match up with No. 2 Michigan. First pitch between the Washtenaw county rivals is slated for 4 p.m. at Alumni Field in Ann Arbor.
