Gills Leads the Way on Day One of NCAA Zone C Diving Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's diving team finished day one of competition at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships with three top-18 finishes on the 3-meter springboard Thursday, March 10.
Three divers qualified to the finals round for the Green and White led by reigning Mid-American Conference Freshman Diver of the Year, Tom Gillis (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel). With a final point total of 668.65, Gillis claimed an automatic NCAA Championship qualifying slot with an eighth-place finish after scoring 307.35 points in the prelims. Junior Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Catholic) and senior Dan Gironza (South Lyon, Mich.-South Lyon) also reached the final round Thursday night. After turning in 292.0 points and an 18th ranking in prelims, Chan finished in 13th with 625.50. Gironza finished just behind him, totaling 624.85 points, good for a 14th-place finish.
Sophomore Peter Rusenas (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) rounded out the Eagles competing, coming in 26th with 262.80 points in prelims. Rusenas final ranking was 10 slots higher than his 36th-place finish from a season ago.
The divers will return to action tomorrow, March 11, to compete on the 1-meter springboard at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center on the campus of Purdue University. Live results can be followed through divemeets.com.
