The win broke a four-game skid
TAMPA, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team avoided the sweep by locking down a 3-2 win over the University of South Florida Sunday afternoon, Feb. 28 at the USF Baseball Complex. The win broke a four-game skid for the Eagles (4-5), and ended their Florida swing on a high note.
Pitching led the way for Eastern in the game, as three hurlers went the distance, holding the Bulls (4-3) to just five hits. Senior Augie Gallardo (Hemet, Calif.-Hemet (Mt. San Jacinto College)) made his second start of the season, getting a no-decision after pitching 4.2 innings and striking out four. In his relief were sophomore lefty Kyle Huckaby (Chandler, Ariz.-Perry), who earned his first win of the year after not allowing a hit in 2.1 innings of work, striking out one. Getting his first save of the season was junior righty Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic), who also didn't allow a hit in two innings of work, and striking out one.
The Eagle offense was held to just five hits as well, but they worked the USF pitchers for seven walks, tying a season-high. The five hits were stretched out between five different hitters, as were the three RBI's.
Both pitchers cruised through the first four innings, only allowing one hit each while striking out four each as well. The pitchers dual broke in the top of the fifth when EMU jumped on the Bulls for two runs.
Back-to-back walks put Eagles at first and second with just one out. Then, Florida native senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) knocked in one on a double down the line, breaking the tie. The next batter, sophomore David Lett (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington), got a second run in on a sacrifice fly to give Eastern a 2-0 lead.
USF answered back immediately though, with two runs on a single and sac fly, tying the game back up and knocking Gallardo out of the game. Huckaby came in relief and, after walking his first batter, got the final out via fly out, leaving the bases loaded. After five, the game remained tied 2-2.
The sixth and seventh innings went as quietly as the first four, with only EMU notching a lone hit in the two trips up to the plate. Meanwhile Huckaby found his groove, not allowing a hit and striking out one, keeping things tied into the eighth.
The tie was broken in the top half of the eighth after USF's starter was relieved after seven strong innings. The Eagles jumped all over the USF pitcher to take the lead 3-2. Senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) led off with a double, which was followed by a walk to put runners on first and second. The next hitter, redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter), ripped a long single off the wall, giving McGeein enough time to come around and score, breaking the tie.
In the eighth and ninth innings, the game belonged to righty reliever Beaton, who continued what Hucakby started, shutting the Bulls hitters down. He only allowed one base runner on a walk, and faced the minimum after a double play, locking up the save.
Eastern now has the middle of the week off before heading out west for a weekend set in Tempe, Ariz. against Arizona State University. The first game of the series is set for a 6:30 MT first pitch, Friday March. 4.
