BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -
The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team picked up right where it left off, qualifying eight individuals for the finals at the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championships Saturday, Feb. 27, in the preliminary round. The flock of Eagles will take part in the championship heats tonight, beginning at 7 p.m. in Cooper Pool.

Junior Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) started the day off on a high note, turning in the third-fastest prelim time to earn a lane in this evening's 200 Backstroke finals. Touching in with a time of 1:57.88, Mitcheltree set a career-best while also clocking in more than a second faster than the school record. Meanwhile, freshman Erika Guenther (Hudson, Wis.-Hudson) will swim in the consolation finals after posting the ninth fastest time in EMU laurels.

In the 100 Freestyle, seniors Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) and Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) headlined the prelims for the Green and White. MacLean turned in a NCAA 'B' cut time of 49.56, setting a career-best that also ranks second in program history, while Detro claimed the seventh slot with a personal-best time of 50.04.

Eastern's backstroke duo delivered a pair of top-eight prelim times to send another pair of Eagles into tonight's finals. Finishing sixth and seventh, respectively, junior Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering) and freshman Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galseburg) claimed lanes in the championship heat.

The Green and White closed out the day, qualifying three for the 200 Butterfly finals. Senior Clarice Daniel (Belcamp, Md.) led the way, turning in the second-fastest prelim time. Her 2:01.33 finish marks a career-best, breaking her previous top time by more than three seconds. Additionally, Daniel's time ranks fifth in Eastern laurels. Junior Carly Jackson (LaPorte, Ind.-LaPorte) wasn't far behind, claiming the fifth slot while freshman Emilie Desnoyers edged out a pair of Ball State swimmers to claim the final lane in the championship race.

Freshman Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) is set to kick things off tonight, swimming in the final championship heat of the 1650 Free while the Eagles also have four divers competing in the final session. Sophomores Molly Miller (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Harrison) and Emily Tubbs (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) will take part in the consolation finals for the 3-meter before fellow sophomores Becky Deacon (Sherwood Park, Alberta-Vimy Ridge Academy) and Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser) battle for the conference title.

The championship heats get underway tonight at 7 p.m. in Cooper Pool. Eastern holds sole possession of second place, trailing Akron and leading Bowling Green, ahead of the final session.
