Brandice Olmos registered two RBIs on the day
CLEARWATER, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – A win over Villanova University was followed by a loss to Georgia State University for the Eastern Michigan University softball team on day two of the USF Tournament, Feb. 27. The Eagles (6-8) edged out the Wildcats (3-5), 3-1, before being blanked by GSU (8-7), 5-0.
Sophomore Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) led the Eagles offensively, with two doubles and two RBI's while freshman Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) finished the day 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Going the distance against Villanova, freshman Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) earned her third career victory. Miranda finished the day with five strikeouts in a total of 10.0 innings pitched while holding opponents to just two earned runs.
Game #1: Eastern Michigan 3, Villanova 1
Neither team mustered much offense in the first two innings, leaving the game scoreless with EMU coming to bat in the third.
Freshman Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) singled to center with one out in the third frame to get the Green and White's offense started. Junior Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown) then singled to put two on for freshman Lucy Lopez (Ventura, Calif.-Stockdale). A hard grounder to second off the bat of Lopez was mishandled, allowing Logan to cross the plate and Wagner to cruise into third. Stepping to the plate with runners on the corners, Olmos doubled to score two, moving Eastern's lead to three, 3-0.
From that point on the Wildcats held the Eagles' bats in check. Miranda matched Villanova's effort, holding VU to one run on four hits to escape with the win, 3-1.
Game #2: Eastern Michigan 0, Georgia State 5
A leadoff double came around to score for the Panthers in the bottom of the first, giving Georgia State an early 1-0 lead. With bases loaded and just one out, sophomore Trisha Trujillo (Whitter, Calif.-California) pitched her way out of the jam. After a line out to second, Trujillo induced an inning-ending ground out to limit the damage.
Trailing by one heading into the top of the fourth, the Green and White were still in search of its first hit of the ball game. With two outs, junior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) broke up the no-hitter with an infield single but a groundout kept the Eagles from capitalizing.
The Panthers tacked on another run in their half of the fourth before the Eagles pieced together a two-out rally in the fifth. A single by senior Mady Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) was followed by a walk, moving Hostetler into scoring position for senior Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange). Unfortunately for EMU, a grounder to third allowed GSU to end the Eagles' threat.
Coming in in relief, Miranda posted two strikeouts in the fifth to keep Eastern within striking distance, but the Eagles were retired in order in the sixth. Georgia State then capitalized on EMU miscues to extend its lead to 5-0 in the sixth.
Down to its final three outs, freshman Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) delivered a leadoff single but was thrown out at second trying to stretch it out to a double. A strikeout ultimately ended the game, 5-0, in favor for GSU.
The Eagles close out the weekend at the USF Tournament tomorrow, Feb. 28, against Seton Hall. First pitch is slated for 10 a.m.
