Green and White Sitting Second After Day One of MAC Indoor Championships

The Eagles narrowly trail Akron by just one point
Day One Results
AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – After the first day of competition at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 26, the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team sits in second-place. Akron leads with 38 points, while EMU sits in second with 37, and Kent State holds third with 34 points.
"I feel that we had a strong day and we set ourselves up nicely for Saturday," remarked Head Coach Sue Parks. "We are ready give it our best and fight hard for every point tomorrow. It was exciting to go 1-2 in the 5000m, along with winning the Distance Medley and performing well in the long jump with personal-bests by both Dace Dreimane and Janina Pollatz. Tomorrow will be a challenging day but we're excited to give it our very best to try to defend our title."
Freshman Jessica Harris (Slidell, La. – Slidell) posted one of the quickest 60m dash times ever in the prelims, where she qualified to the finals after finishing first in 7.48. Her time was a personal-best, and was also tied for the ninth fastest time in EMU history. Senior Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind. – John Adams) also qualified to the finals after finishing fourth with a time of 7.56, which was also a career-best. McKinney carried the momentum into the 200m, where she also qualified to the finals after once again taking fourth. Her mark of 24.35 was another personal-best, and also put her eighth in the EMU record books. Sophomore Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa. – Hempfield Area) and senior Morgan Yeadon (Indianapolis, Ind. – Pike) also placed ninth and 10th, respectively, and nabbed two more career-bests.
The Eagles had two more runners post solid times in the 400m dash, where junior Khadesha James (Irvington, N.J. – Irvington) and sophomore Chante Roberts (Lansing, Mich. – Waverly) took ninth and 12th, respectively. James clocked in at 55.67, which was a personal-best, while Roberts was just behind her in 56.06. Sophomore Jenna Wyns (Londerzeel, Belgium – Sportschol KA2) led the team in the 800m, crossing the finish line in 2:11.20 to take fifth. Wyns narrowly missed her personal-best by just .10.
In the 5000m, the Eagles took home the top-two spots, with the pair of junior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia – Lyceum #83) and sophomore Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. – Davison) dominating the field. Bogdanova narrowly edged out McDermitt, crossing the finish line in 16:29.91, which was a MAC Championship record. The sophomore was less than a second behind, coming in at 16:30.33. The third-place finisher was two seconds behind McDermitt, but from there the next closest time came in 15 seconds later. Junior Anna Aldrich (Fremont, Ind. – Fremont) also ran in the event, posting a time of 17:30.39.
Both sophomore Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J. – Toms River North) and senior Maya Carter (Racine, Wis. – Case) qualified to the finals in the 60m hurdles, with Byrd leading the way in fifth-place. Her time of 8.60 was a career-best, as was Carter's time of 8.64, which put her in fifth. The team grabbed another event title in the distance medley relay, as the group of freshman Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. – Zionsville Community), James, sophomore Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. – Chippewa Valley), and senior Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium – University of Leuven) took the crown with a time of 11:31.11, the fourth best in program history. The team was nearly four seconds faster than the second-place group from Miami.
The Green and White managed to grab a pair of top-five finishes in the long jump, with sophomore Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia - Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) nabbing fourth with a personal-best mark of 5.95 meters/ 19 feet 6.25-inches. Dreimane's mark put her in a tie for the eighth best mark in EMU history. Just behind her, junior Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich. – Grand Rapids Christian) nabbed fifth, posting a jump of 5.82 meters/ 19 feet 1-inch, which was also a career-best.
Junior Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif. – Carson) and freshman Rebekah Carr (Celina, Ohio – Celina) both participated in the pentathlon. Hurd's best events came in the form of the 60m hurdles and the 800m run, where she finished fourth and second, respectively. Her time of 8.83 in the hurdles was a personal best, along with her mark of 2:27.10 in the 800m. Carr, on the other hand, excelled in the jumps, taking ninth in both the high jump and the long jump. Like Hurd, she also notched a few career bests, including a jump of 1.51 meters/ 4 feet 11.5-inches in the high jump. Hurd was the top Eagle finisher overall, coming in ninth with 3128 points in her pentathlon debut, while Carr finished 13th with 2762 points.
The Eagles will look to continue their success tomorrow, Feb. 27, with day two of competition beginning at 12:50 p.m. with the running events. Field events will begin shortly after at 1 p.m.
