BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Records fell and champions were crowned for the Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team on day three of the Mid-American Conference Championships, Feb. 26. Senior Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) and freshman Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) won the 200 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke, respectively, to propel Eastern back into second place with one day of competition remaining.
The championship heats opened with the 400 Individual Medley where senior Clarice Daniel (Belcamp, Md.) looked to continue her stellar week. After posting a career-best earlier in the day, Daniel claimed third, finishing nearly two seconds ahead of the fourth-place finisher.
Then, in the 200 Free, the Eagles benefitted from a pair of personal-bests. Coming in with the top-seeded time after clocking in with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:47.80 in prelims, Detro became the first Eagle since 2009 to earn the top spot on the podium in the event. Outlasting a talented field, Detro touched in with a time of 1:47.39, marking a career-best and the third fastest swim in EMU laurels. Becoming the fourth swimmer to earn the title, Detro gave the Green and White its seventh win in the event all-time. Also in the field was junior Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) who posted a career-best as well. Van Allen won a three-way battle for fourth to best Bowling Green's Tara Capouch and Buffalo's Jess Powers with a time of 1:49.23. Van Allen's time ranks ninth in program annals.
Eastern doubled its number of MAC Champions moments later behind a fantastic performance by Duncan in the 100 Breaststroke. Finishing more than a second ahead of the field, Duncan clocked in with a time of 59.46. Her scorching time broke the school record, meet record, and conference record while also making the NCAA 'B' cut. With her win, the Galesburg, Ill. product became the first Eagle since Ellen Borgo in 2003 to win the event. Junior Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering) shaved nearly three tenths of a second of her prelim time on her way to a fifth-place finish behind Duncan.
The Green and White then increased its point total with a fourth and eighth-place finish in the 100 Backstroke. Junior Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) took fourth with a time of 53.96 while senior Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) placed eighth.
With the individual events for the day in the books, the session turned to the 400 Medley Relay to close out the evening's competition. With the race beginning with the backstroke leg, Mitcheltree put the Eagles in front early before Duncan took over. Going stroke-for-stroke with Akron, Duncan handed things over to junior Carly Jackson (LaPorte, Ind.-LaPorte) for the butterfly portion of the race. Maintaining Eastern's first-place standing, Jackson paved the way for MacLean to close things out. In front of the Zips by less than a second, a clean turn fueled MacLean to an incredible final 25 meters in which the Bloomfield Hills, Mich. product out-swam her Akron counterpart to give EMU its first relay win since 2008, clocking in with a time of 3:37.17, narrowly missing the meet record.
The Eagles close out the MAC Championships tomorrow, Feb. 27, with hopes of building on an impressive day three showing. Preliminaries begin at 11 a.m. while the final session begins at 6:45 p.m.
