Women’s Track and Field Set to Defend Title

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team will have a target on their back heading into this weekend's Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 26-27. The Eagles, who took home the title last season, will look to repeat and claim their fifth-ever conference championship, putting them in a three-way tie for the most championships in MAC history.
The Green and White come into the MAC Championship ranked No. 81 in the country. Akron leads the MAC in the rankings, coming in at No. 21, while Kent State sits at No. 93. Central Michigan rounds out the teams in the rankings, occupying the No. 127 spot.
On the individual level, the Eagles' distance group claims five top-50 spots. In the mile, junior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia - Lyceum #83) maintains the No. 42 spot, running a 4:41.15 at the Meyo invitational, Feb. 5. The 3000m is where the team shines, as the Green and White have three runners in the top-35. Bogdanova leads the way in 20th, clocking in at 9:16.91 at the Iowa State Classic, Feb. 12. Less than two seconds behind her is senior Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium - University of Leuven) in 28th, with her time of 9:18.41 also coming at the Iowa State Classic. Finally, sophomore Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. - Davison) sits at No. 31 with a time of 9:18.86, which came at the Meyo Invite.
McDermitt is also highly-ranked in the 5000m, coming in at No. 20. The sophomore ran a blazing 15:58.18 at the Iowa State Classic, which was a program record. The distance medley group of Gallein, sophomores Chante Roberts (Lansing, Mich. - Waverly) and Jenna Wyns (Londerzeel, Belgium - Sportschol KA2), and Bogdanova turned in a quick time of 11:19.41 at the Penn State National, Jan. 29. Finally, senior Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio - Pandora-Gilboa) clings to the No. 50 spot in the pole vault with a mark of 4.09 meters/ 13 feet 5-inches, also set at Penn State.
The MAC Championship is slated to get underway Friday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m. with the heptathlon 60m. Friday's events will conclude with the finals of the women's distance medley relay at 5:45 p.m. The action will pick back up on Saturday, Feb. 27, with the heptathlon 60m hurdles.
