The class features five players hailing from Canada
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan Unviersity Head Soccer Coach Scott Hall announced the Eagles 2016 signing class, Wednesday, Feb. 10. The class features five Canadians in Mabel Dunn (Oakville, Ontario-White Oaks Secondary School), Nicole Remedios (Ajax, Ontario-Archbishop Denis O'Connor), Aubrey Martin (Etobicoke, Ontario-Father John Redmond), Maggie McCullough (London, Ontario-Oakridge Secondary School), and Sabrina McNeil (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street High School), all of whom signed their national letters of intent last week.
"We are very proud to announce the addition of this group to our Eagle family," Hall said. "It is an unusual class having all five players coming in from Canada but with their abilities we firmly believe they can help from the start in our quest to move up in the standings."
"Mabel has all the tools to be a great Division I goalkeeper," Hall stated. "She has great size, incredible stength, and has shown the ability to use her feet and be a great shot stopper. We look forward to pairing her with Kaylin Williams and watching her development."
A 5-foot-10 goalkeeper, Dunn hails from Oakville, Ontario where she prepped at White Oaks Secondary School. A two-year letterwinner and a two-time team captain for Karry Brabenec and the Wildcats, Dunn boasted a save percentage of .872 last season while being named the team's most valuable player. Additionally, Dunn lettered in volleyball, basketball, and skiing as a Wildcat.
"Nicole can play a lot of roles for us next year, especially in the middle of the field," Hall shared. "She is an exteremly versatile player and smooth distributor of the ball. Nicole's comfort and confidence in handling the ball at her feet under pressure make her a great addition to our team. We love her competitive spirit on the roccer field as a relentless attacker and sly defender."
A two-sport athelte, Remedios comes to Eastern Michigan from Ajax, Ontario where she captained the Archbishop Denis O'Connor Chargers. Standing at 5-foot-5, Remedios spent a majority of her time on the pitch split between defense and midfield. As part of Pickering Power Soccer Club, Remedios fueled her team to the Ontario Cup finals and well as a Robbie Cup Championship.
"Aubrey's size and speed as a center back makes her standout in this class," Hall said. "We hope that her athleticism matched with her ability to defend can jump start our defense and help us become one of the best in the Mid-American Conference."
Martin bolsters the Eagles defense as a 6-foot center back from Etibicoke, Ontario. As a Redhawk at Father John Redmond Catholic, Martin led her squad to a Toronto District Catholic Athletic Association Championship (TDCAA) while also helping the Redhawks qualify for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations Championships. A three-time athlete of the year nominee, Martin earned most valuable player honors last season.
"Maggie's one of those players that you watch and you instantly know you want on your team," Hall said. "She's a competitor who is hungry to win. We think that she has the potential to play many roles for us as her athletic abilities in all of her athletic endeavors continue to amaze us."
A London, Ontario native, McCullough joins the Eagles as an attacking midfielder who has also spent significant time at forward. The 5-foot-7, McCullough, prepped at Oakridge Secondary School where she led the Oak Trees to a Thames Valley Board of Education City Championship and a TDCAA Championship. A two-time Athlete of the Year selection, she helped the Oak Trees to a bronze medal at the 2014 Outdoor Ontario Cup Youth Soccer League Championships in 2014 and a silver medal in 2015. A talented multi-sport athlete, McCullough has been named most valuable player in basketball, volleyball, and badminton in addition to claiming the bronze medal in pole vault at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association Championships.
"Sabrina's first three steps are like getting shot out of a gun," Hall said. "We like her pace and ability to create scoring chances."
Rounding out the talented class is McNeil, a 5-foot-4 striker from Whitby, Ontario. A decorated prep athlete at Henry Street High School, McNeil will reunite with former club teammate, Kristin Nason. The speedy duo played together for Oshawa Kicks Inferno. As a Hawk at Henry Street High School, McNeil led her team to a Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletic second place finish. An offensive minded player with incredible speed, McNeil could make an immediate impact for a young Eagles squad.
The five signees will join the Eagles for preseason in early August before the Green and White open its schedule later in the month.
