YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team, in unison with Team IMPACT, announced yesterday, Dec. 8, that the Eagles signed 10-year old Ella Dover (Ann Arbor, Mich.) to a ceremonial letter of commitment to join the team for the next few years.
Team IMPACT is national organization, based in Boston, whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team. Team IMPACT children are drafted on to college athletic teams, local to where they live and, in effect, become official members of the team from Draft Day through to graduation.
"The first time we came to practice, Ella had been having a rough day, and we didn't think she would last more than an hour," said Brian Dover, Ella's father. "In fact, she stayed the entire four hours, and she really looks forward to it now. It's neat to have something for her to look forward to, and that gives us so much joy to see her happy and a part of something."
Ella, who is 10 years old, suffers from chronic epilepsy and has multiple seizures daily. This, however, does not have an impact on her attitude, as she is always smiling and approaching life with a positive attitude. Ella will be a regular at practice and meets, and will also join the Green and White for team activities and events throughout the year.
"We were fortunate enough to meet Ella about two weeks ago, and she has already come to two of our practices," stated Head Coach Sarah Brown. "We've really enjoyed getting to know her and her parents. We love having them in the gym, and we're thrilled to have Ella here. She just signed her letter of commitment, and we can't wait to have her as a member of our roster for the next few years."
Established in 2011, Team IMPACT has already matched over 1000 children with collegiate teams at over 430 institutions in 45 states, improving the quality of life of hundreds of courageous children and touching the lives of over 30,000 student athletes. The Eagles kick off their season tomorrow, Dec. 10, with an exhibition meet at Michigan. For more information, please click here.
