Tyson earns the honor for the first time in his career
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Sophomore Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate) of the Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team was named the Mid-American Conference's Swimmer of the Week for the period ending Dec. 4, the league office announced today, Dec. 8. The conference office's announcement marks the first time Tyson has received the honor in his career, and the third time an Eagle has won the award this season.
Tyson was unstoppable for the Eagles at the EMU Invitational, Dec. 2-3. The meet's top point-scorer, Tyson racked up 60 points thanks to three individual event wins, three relay victories, and a third place relay to lead the Eagles to the top of the team standings at the invite.
The Ipswich, England native opened the weekend with a win in the 100 free, where he touched in with the fastest time in the MAC this year (44.84) for the win. Then, in the 200 free, Tyson clocked in with the fastest time by an Eagle this season (1:39.92) to secure another win before wrapping up his individual performances with a season-best in the 200 IM. His 200 IM time of 1:52.40 was also the fastest by an Eagle this year.
Tyson was also a pivotal part of EMU's relay success over the weekend, swimming as the anchor on Eastern's first-place finishing 200, 400, and 800 Free Relay squads. His strong weekend also included a third-place finish as the anchor of EMU's 400 Medley Relay that touched in with a time of 3:19.64, the third-fastest in the MAC this season.
Tyson is the second Eagle to earn the award this season, joining fellow sophomore Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary), who has garnered the league honor twice this year.
The EMU Invitational marked the final competition of the calendar year for Tyson and the Eagles. Eastern returns to action next month, Jan. 14, at home in MAC dual action against Ball State at 1 p.m.
