Each week two Eagles will be honored for their success on the field

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Each week, the Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics names the EMU Credit Union's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic media relations department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are swimmers Jake Tyson and Mary Grace Van Allen.

Week's Achievements: Tyson was unstoppable for the Eagles at the EMU Invite, Dec. 2-3. The meets top point-scorer, Tyson racked up 60 points thanks to three individual event wins, three relay victories, and a third place relay. Tyson opened the weekend with a win in the 100 free, where he touched in with the fastest time in the MAC this year (44.84) for the win. In the 200 free, Tyson clocked in with the fastest time by an Eagle this season (1:39.92) to secure the win. Then, in the 200 IM, Tyson shaved almost two seconds off his previous season-best to turn in a new season-best time of 1:52.40. The Ipswich, England native's 200 IM time was also the fastest by an Eagle this season. Tyson was also a pivotal part of EMU's relay success over the weekend, swimming as the anchor on Eastern's first-place finishing 200, 400, and 800 Free Relay squads. His strong weekend also included a third-place finish as the anchor of EMU's 400 Medley Relay that touched in with a time of 3:19.64, the third-fastest in the MAC this season.

Week's Achievements: Van Allen was dominant for the Eagles over the weekend, Dec. 2-3, at the EMU Invitational, scoring a meet-high 57 points to lead the Green and White to its highest point total at the event in more than a decade. Van Allen picked up a pair of individual victories, while helping the Eagles to three relay wins, including two meet records. After picking up a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle with a season-best time of 51.68, the Indianapolis, Ind. product notched wins in the 200 free and 200 IM. In the 200 free, Van Allen touched in with the fastest time by an Eagle this year, 1:50.77, before adding another top finish in the 200 IM where she bested the field by more than three seconds. The senior swimmer also played a pivotal role in EMU's relay success. After helping the Eagles to a win in the 200 Free Relay with the fastest time for Eastern this season, Van Allen and the Eagles posted a pair of meet records. In the 400 Free Relay, the Green and White broke a 10-year old record en route to winning the event with a time of 3:23.46. Then, in the 400 Medley Relay, EMU touched in with its fastest time of the season to break the meet record that was previously set in 2011. With the EMU Invitational victory, the Eagles close out 2016 with a perfect 4-0 dual record and have been victorious in their lone invitational so far this year.
