EMU finished tied for 16th as a team out of 35

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team wrapped up competition at the Cliff Keen Invitational this afternoon, Dec. 3.

The Eagles went up against some of the top teams in the country and came away with a tied for 16th team finish out of 34 teams, while placing two wrestlers in the top-eight. Overall, EMU notched 34 team points over the two-day tournament.

Redshirt freshman Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) took fifth at 125 lbs., while redshirt junior Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) took seventh in the heavyweight division.

Both wrestlers began their days in the consolation brackets, needing one win to get into the placement matches.

Gonser matched up with Vlad Kasakov of Nebraska-Kearney in the consolation round of eight. The first period was a whirlwind, ending with Gonser up 8-4 after a couple reversals and a near fall. In period two, Gonser started on bottom, quickly got another reversal, and then pinned Kasakov in 4:49 to get to the consolation quarterfinals.

He advanced automatically to the consolation semifinals after a medical forfeit. In the semis, he met No. 7 seeded Trey Andrews of Northern Colorado. The bout was tied 2-2 going into the second, but a reversal and near fall for Andrews put him ahead 8-2 into the third. Gonser battled, but ended up short, 8-5, sending him to the 5th place match.

Matching up against CSU-Bakersfield's Sean Nickell, Gonser wrestled a great defensive match. He didn't allow a point to be scored on him, while a third period near fall and riding time gave him fifth place by a 5-0 decision.

Hutchison began his day with a matchup against Cody Crawford of Oregon State. After a scoreless first period, Hutchison notched a reversal in period two to lead into the third. A takedown and riding time gave Hutchison the win and the consolation quarterfinal berth.

In the consolation quarters, Hutchison met No. 6 seeded and No. 16 nationally ranked Billy Miller of Edinboro. Despite notching a two-point near fall, Hutchison was felled by an 8-3 decision to drop to the seventh place match. There, he was able to take seventh after a medical forfeit.

Eastern returns to the mats next weekend with their first home duals of the season. EMU will host a double dual against Cleveland State and Indiana, Sunday, Dec. 11. Action from Ypsilanti will begin at noon.
