Eagles Conclude Non-Conference Schedule with 98-72 Victory Over Long Beach State

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team capped off its non-conference schedule with a convincing 98-72 victory over Long Beach State University today, Dec. 29. The Eagles (8-5) were hot on the offensive end of the floor throughout the game, downing the 49ers (5-11) with five Eagles scoring in double figures.
As a team, EMU finished the day 29-of-54 (54 percent) from the field, including dropping seven shots from behind the arc. The Green and White controlled the boards, outrebounding the 49ers by a 35-27 margin. Additionally, the squad forced 20 LBSU turnovers, turning those into 25 points. The Eagles' point total of 98 points was the most points scored against an NCAA Division I opponent since Jan. 6, 2016, when Eastern Michigan defeated Central Michigan, 99-80.
Redshirt senior Ray Lee (Detroit, Mich. – Romulus) paced the Eagles, finishing the day with 20 points, including a trio of three-pointers, in addition to five assists and two steals. Additionally, both senior Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va. – Marshall (San Jacinto College)) and redshirt sophomore Jordan Nobles (Canton, Mich. – Canton) tacked on 15 apiece, with Mangum also notching four assists, while Nobles had eight rebounds and six assists. For Nobles, the 15 points and six assists were both career highs. Finally, sophomore James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La. – Parkview Baptist) had 12 points, while junior Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md. – City College High School) had 10 points and seven rebounds.
Both teams were scoreless through the opening minute of play, before Nobles scored the first points of the game, after which Long Beach State tied it up at two apiece. A pair of 49ers threes broke the tie, making the score 8-2 at the 16:25 mark. Bond sunk a pair from the charity stripe to cut the lead to four, 8-4, at the first media timeout.
An alley-oop from Mangum to Thompson kept the Eagles rolling, as they trailed by just two. After a Long Beach basket, Bond responded with a jumper to cut the lead back to two, but the 49ers came right back with another score of their own. LBSU continued their hot shooting, opening a 15-10 lead before both teams scored to make it 17-12.
A Nobles jumper then cut the lead to three, 17-14, after which Lee tied it up with a shot from downtown. Long Beach broke the tie with a pair of free throws, but the Eagles quickly retook the lead, 20-19. A three from Mangum gave EMU their largest lead of the game thus far, 23-19, with just over seven minutes left until the break.
Redshirt senior Quaran Jones (Fargo, N.D. – Ecorse (Findlay)) then went to the line, making one-of-two to push the lead to five. Another three from Mangum made the score 29-23 with less than five minutes left in the half. The pressure continued, as sophomore Baylee Steele (Norwalk, Iowa – Norwalk (Des Moines Area C.C.)) sunk a pair from the charity stripe for the 31-23 lead. At the 3:24 mark, the 49ers cut into the lead, but EMU still led by six, 33-27.
Nobles then drained a three to push the EMU lead to double digits, 38-27, with just under two minutes until the break. The Green and White stayed hot on the offensive end, increasing their lead to 45-29 with 39.5 seconds remaining. Eastern tacked on four more points to head into the break with a big 20-point lead, 49-29.
Lee opened the second half with a three, followed by a jumper from Steele. At the 16:35 mark, the Eagles held a 56-38 lead, after which redshirt junior Nick Madray (Mississauga, Ontario – Stephen Lewis (Binghamton)) tacked on two more for EMU. A floater from Nobles then put Eastern Michigan back ahead by 20, 60-40, at the first media timeout.
Similar to the start of the half, Lee sunk another three to put his total to 16 points on the day. The Eagles kept attacking, with the score standing at 69-51 at the 11:30 mark. A put-back by Thompson kept the offensive momentum rolling, after which he followed that up with a big dunk. He then converted two free throws, making the score 75-52. Eastern continued spreading the ball around on the offensive end, with multiple Eagles contributing throughout the second half. Redshirt junior Lamar Wofford-Humphrey (Chicago, Ill. – Homewood-Flossmoor (Butler C.C.)) sunk a nice layup on an assist from Lee to put the score at 83-60 near the six-minute mark.
As the clock ticked down, the Green and White held strong with a 28-point lead, 89-61, with just 4:17 left. Wofford-Humphrey continued his strong play down the stretch, knocking down a tip-in with roughly 2:30 to go. Redshirt sophomore Blake Brown (Novi, Mich. – Novi (UNLV)) closed things out with a pair of free throws, and the Green and White concluded the non-conference schedule with a convincing 98-72 victory over LBSU.
This marks the end of the non-conference play for the Eagles. The MAC portion of the season is slated to begin Tuesday, Jan. 3, with a home game against Central Michigan at 7 p.m.
