The redshirt freshman went 2-0 in the previous weekend's tri-dual
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Mid-American Conference announced today, Dec. 14, that redshirt freshman Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) was named the MAC Wrestler of the Week for the period ending, Dec. 12. It was the second wrestler of the week honor for EMU this season and the first of Gonser's career.
Gonser had a dominating day in the tri-dual against Cleveland State and Indiana, Sunday, Dec. 11. He won both of his bouts at 125 lbs., including a first period pin over CSU's Spencer Dusi right before the buzzer in 2:59 to spring the Eagles to a 38-12 win over the Vikings.
He also had a victory over nationally ranked IU opponent Elijah Oliver, who was ranked No. 17 by InterMat. That was Gonser's second win over a nationally recognized grappler this season. In his first season in the starting lineup, Gonser is 11-4 and 3-1 in duals.
After his great start to the season, Gonser is receiving national attention, as the redshirt freshman is being ranked by most national outlets, including as high as No. 15 at 125 lbs.
Eastern is done with dual action in the 2016 calendar year, but will wrestle once more before the New Year at The Midlands tournament in Evanston, Ill. The all day tournament will run, Dec. 29-30 and will pit the Eagles against some of the top teams in the country.
