Four Eagles went 2-0 on the day
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team split a tri-dual today, Dec. 11 at the Convocation Center, defeating Cleveland State, 38-12, before falling to Indiana, 25-12.
The Eagles (3-1, 0-0 MAC) dominated the Vikings (1-4, 0-0 EWL) winning eight of ten bouts, including four by pin, while also notching a technical fall. Only one loss came on the mats, as EMU forfeited a weight class. Against the Hoosiers (6-2, 0-1 B1G), Eastern won two of the first three matches, but ultimately could not overcome its powerful Big Ten opponent.
The highlight of the day was redshirt freshman Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) who won both of his bouts at 125 lbs., including a pin over CSU and a victory over a nationally ranked IU opponent. In his first season in the starting lineup, Gonser is 11-4 and now 3-1 in duals.
Also going 2-0 on the day was redshirt junior Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) at 141 lbs., who won both matches by decision, including one over his former team. 197-pound redshirt sophomore Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven) was 2-0 with a pin and decision over IU, while redshirt junior heavyweight Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) went undefeated with a fall and decision.
EMU began with a bang against the Vikings, as both Gonser and redshirt freshman Sa'Derian Perry (Lakeland, Fla.-Lake Gibson) picked up first period falls. At 125 lbs., the Grand Blanc native picked up a takedown early, and worked for the fall right before the buzzer sounded. It was his fourth of the season. Perry was a little quicker with his third fall of the year, as he pinned his opponent in just 1:27. After the first two weight classes, EMU led 12-0.
At 141 lbs., Eastern had a tougher time getting the points, but still managed a 5-3 decision for Springer. The redshirt junior fought off multiple shots in the final period to secure the decision. The Eagles got more bonus points at 149 lbs. as redshirt senior Nick Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) notched a pair of near falls to rack up the points on his way to a 17-2 technical fall, his first of the season. Four weight classes in, EMU held the commanding 20-0 advantage.
Eastern picked up another hard fought decision at 157 lbs., as redshirt freshman Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake) worked his way to a 10-7 match. The Akron native started off with an 8-2 lead in the second with a couple takedowns and a near fall, but the CSU grappler battled back with a reversal and takedown after an escape to make it 9-6 into the final period. Carson held off any more attacks in the third to secure the points for EMU, making it 23-0 midway through.
Making his season debut, redshirt senior Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Hudson) wrestled at 165 lbs. He kept the shutout in tact with a 6-2 decision. The veteran did not give up a takedown until the third period, but had a takedown and reversal to push the score to 26-0.
The shutout was broken at 174 lbs. after EMU forfeited the bout. The Vikings earned their first points match at 184 lbs. with a fall of their own to tighten the score to 26-12.
The Eagles got back to winning in the final two weight classes, as both Hillman and Hutchison picked up falls for EMU. Hillman's first pin of the season came in 2:10, while Hutchison notched his team-leading fifth in 2:56 to secure the 38-12 match victory.
After the second dual of the day between IU and CSU, Eastern got back into action against the Hoosiers.
To start the match, Gonser drew No. 17 nationally ranked Elijah Oliver. The redshirt freshman notched an early takedown, but an escape made it 2-1 after one. After a scoreless second, the third was full of action. Gonser began with an escape, but Oliver got a takedown to tie 3-3. With riding time in tact, Oliver let Gonser go to try and get a takedown, but Gonser ended up notching one in the end, and with the riding time he took the decision, 7-3.
The Hoosiers tied the dual at three apiece at 133 lbs. with a hard fought 4-2 decision. That set up Springer wrestling his former team at 141 lbs. Springer came out firing with two takedowns in the first to lead 4-1. Period two only yielded an escape to make it 4-2, but Springer got his third takedown in the third on his way to a 7-3 decision, giving EMU the lead back, 6-3.
IU gained their first lead of the day at 149 lbs., when Barber got caught in a scramble in the third, and was pinned in 6:07 to make it 9-6 Indiana after four bouts. An overtime win at 157 lbs. extended their lead to 12-6 at the midway point. Eastern's deficit went to 15-6 after a scrappy 165 lbs. match that ended in favor of IU, 7-3.
Eastern dropped its fourth straight at 174 lbs., as IU got their second pin of the day to break the dual open with a 21-6 score. A major decision at 184 lbs. for IU gave them a commanding 25-6 lead.
The Eagles broke the streak at 197 lbs., as Hillman won an extremely tough match with a late takedown. Trailing 3-2 with time winding down in the final period, Hillman got a decisive takedown with 15 seconds to give EMU more points, 25-9. In the final match, Hutchison ground out a 4-3 decision with two first period takedowns to hold on for the win, as the Eagles fell, 25-12.
Eastern is done with dual action in the 2016 calendar year, but will wrestle once more before the New Year at The Midlands tournament in Evanston, Ill. The all day tournament will run, Dec. 29-30 and will pit the Eagles against some of the top teams in the country.
