EMU's Dr. Edward Sidlow helping provide prospective leading up to the election

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — With the election of the 45th President of the United States of America just days away, the Eastern Michigan University football team is learning more about four of the individuals who had held the office leading up to the squad's Election Night game at Ball State University Tuesday, Nov. 8. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. from Scheumann Stadium in Muncie, Ind.

The idea was developed with EMU's Faculty Athletic Representative Dr. Edward Sidlow, whom is frequently called on by print and broadcast media for political commentary and analysis. A political science professor at EMU, Sidlow helped develop four short stories that were given to each student-athlete that each contained a special message that was tied to the team's practice plan for the day.

The four presidents that Sidlow developed the stories for were John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Ronald Reagan, and Barack Obama. The lessons do not showcase political views of each president, instead were about monumental moments that helped change the course of history. For example, the message about JFK was about his perseverance to put a man on the moon, while Regan's was his famous speech in West Berlin.

On the field, the Eagles will make a point to recognize Election Day -- with very patriotic helmets. The team's special head gear will feature an American flag-inspired Block E design on each side and a nose bumper on the front of each helmet printed with the word "VOTE," with the "E" in vote as an EMU green block E logo. A helmet stripe down the center listing the last name of each of the 44 U.S. Presidents will complete the look.

The special helmet design is not the only change for EMU, as the radio broadcast will also shift affiliates for the night to Cumulus Media Ann Arbor's W4 County (102.9 WWWW-FM). Due to election night coverage, EMU Athletic's tradition flagship station WEMU (89.1 FM) will remain with local and national election results updates.

W4 Country will stream the game on their website, as well as on the iHeartRadio or TuneIn applications on your phone or other steaming device. The station's signal covers all of southeastern Michigan, reaching north of Flint, Mich. and as far south as Toledo, Ohio while also reaching part of Canada.
