Freshman Andrew McNally placed fifth at 174 lbs. in his first action at EMU
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team officially opened the 2016-17 season when it hosted the EMU Open inside the Convocation Center, Saturday, Nov. 5. The Eagles sent ten wrestlers onto the mats, and were led by freshman Andrew McNally (Uniontown, Ohio-Lake), who wrestled unattached and placed fifth in the 174 lbs. bracket.
Up against a stacked field of wrestlers that included potential starters from Big Ten schools Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, Indiana, Northwestern, and Ohio State, as well as MAC foes Central Michigan, Northern Illinois, and Ohio, Eastern finished with 12 wins among the 10 wrestlers.
McNally took fifth place in a bracket that included 27 wrestlers. The 'true' freshman began his career with a bang, as he pinned his opponent in just 50 seconds. He followed that up with a 15-0 technical fall to advance to the quarterfinal.
There, he fell to eventual champion Myles Amine of Michigan and was sent to the consolation. Despite the setback, McNally proceeded to rattle off three straight victories in the wrestle backs to claim the fifth spot.
In the first consolation, the Uniontown, Ohio native nabbed his second pin of the day, this time in 1:53. Following that, he had a hard earned 6-4 decision over Seth Williams of Ohio State to get to the fifth-place match. In his final bout, McNally dominated his opponent, Quinton Rosser of NIU, for a decisive 12-4 major decision victory.
Four Eagles made their debuts in the EMU Open in addition to McNally. Redshirt freshman Kris Hill (Columbus, Ohio-Bishop Hartley), along with unattached freshmen Tomas Gutierrez (Arvada, Colo.-Pomona), Zach Blevins (Dundee, Mich.-Dundee), and Jared Leidich (Olmstead Falls, Ohio-St. Edward) wrestled today. Gutierrez, Blevins and Leidich all found some measure of success as each had two victories on the afternoon.
Both Gutierrez and Blevins won the first two matches of their careers before falling in the quarterfinals and consolation matches. Gutierrez took victory in tight decisions, 5-3 and 5-4 at 125 lbs., while Blevins started his college career with a pin in 4:39, followed by a 7-5 decision at 141 lbs.
Meanwhile, Leidich was felled in his first college match at 174 lbs., but battled back to win a couple matches in the consolation bracket, which included a 14-4 major decision over Dean Vettese of Michigan State.
The only other Eagle to pick up a victory on the day was redshirt freshman Jared Langley (Newton, Kan.-Newton), who won an 8-4 decision on the consolation round at 197 lbs.
The Eagles open dual action next week when they travel down the road to Olivet College. The dual against the Comets is set for 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11.
