YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team opens the 2016-17 season this weekend when the team hosts the EMU Open inside the Convocation Center, Saturday, Nov. 5. EMU enters the third season under the guidance of Head Coach David Bolyard, and are coming off their second winning season in three years as the squad finished with an 8-7 record in the 2015-16 season.

The team sent four wrestlers to the NCAA championships last season, the third time doing so since 2011-12. Two of those grapplers return this season with redshirt senior Nick Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) at 149 lbs. and heavyweight redshirt junior Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) gracing the lineup this season.

This season's schedule boasts seven home duals at the Convocation Center and Bowen Field House, along with seven duals on the road. Eastern will also host two EMU Opens, one this weekend, and one in February to close out the season.

The Eagles once again face one of the toughest schedules in the country competing in the Mid-American Conference. EMU faces three opponents ranked in the top-25 of the preseason National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, including Missouri (5), Central Michigan (19), and Northern Iowa (22). Two other opponents also received votes, in Old Dominion and Ohio. Eastern will also host a pair of Big Ten opponents this season, Indiana and Michigan State.

With Eastern set to return eight of 10 starters, they were selected to finished tied for fourth in the preseason MAC poll, receiving nine points. They also had four grapplers ranked in the top-4 of their respective weight classes.

125 lbs.

Redshirt sophomore Armando Torres (Lorain, Ohio-Elyria) returns at 125 lbs. after being the primary starter last season in his first season in the lineup. The Ohio native ended the year with 12 wins, including records of 9-4 in duals and 4-3 in conference. He posted two major decisions and two technical falls in dual action.

Looking to crack the starting lineup at 125 lbs. will be redshirt freshman Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc), who had an outstanding redshirt season last year, going 16-10 wrestling unattached at 125/133 lbs. He placed in four tournaments, including taking the 125 lbs. title at the EMU Open. He tied for the team lead in falls with six.

133 lbs.

Returning for his final season is three-year starter senior Shayne Wireman (Lansing, Mich.-Holt). Wireman holds a 37-15 career record after coming off an injury shortened junior campaign. The Lansing native posted seven wins on the year, including three dual and two conference victories. He capped the year by finishing sixth at the MAC Championships, which included an upset win over the No. 2 seeded Zach Synon of Missouri.

Backing Wireman up at 133 lbs. is redshirt freshman Sa'Derian Perry (Lakeland, Fla.-Lake Gibson). Perry posted a 13-9 record in his first season in the Green and White, wrestling at 141 lbs. He took third at the Alma Open, posting four wins, which included two pins.

141 lbs.

Redshirt junior Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) returns for his second season as the primary starter at 141 lbs. The Indiana transfer has posted an impressive 48-28 record since joining the Eagles, including a steady 17-14 record in 2015-16. Springer finished 8-6 in duals for EMU, including three conference wins. With his team-leading five major decisions, Springer finished second on the team with 41 dual points. He was ranked tied for second in the preseason MAC rankings at 141 lbs.

149 lbs.

Barber will have his last go-round as the 149 lbs. starter for EMU in 2016-17. The three-year starter is coming off his best season as an Eagle in 2015-16 after qualifying for his first ever NCAA Championships. There he made a little noise, knocking off No. 15 seeded Daniel Neff of Lock Haven. In total, Barber finished with a 19-12 record, including 8-6 in duals and 4-4 in the MAC. He qualified for the NCAA's after taking third at the MAC Championships as the fifth seed. The Cleveland, Ohio native holds a 65-40 career record at EMU. Barber was slotted fourth in the preseason
MAC rankings at 149 lbs.

157 lbs.

Redshirt senior Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Hudson) will look to headline the 157 lbs. class in his final season at Eastern. As the starter in 2015-16, Marry had 10 wins, including seven in dual action. He led the team in pins with six, including one in just 14 seconds.

Pushing Marry from behind will be redshirt freshman Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake), who had an outstanding redshirt season in 2015-16. Carson had an 18-8 record wrestling unattached at 157 lbs., including five falls. He won nine of his last 11 matches of the season en route to second place finishes at both the Purple Raider Open and the Edinboro Open.

165 lbs.

One of two spots that is replacing a starter from last season will be the 165 lbs. class. Looking to take that starting roll is redshirt freshman David Kasper (Chicago, Ill-Marist). The Chicago native went 5-5 in his first season at EMU, only competing in three tournaments. Both Marry and Carson may wrestle up at 165 lbs. this season as as Bolyard works to find the right starting combination at the weight class.

174 lbs.

While the 165 remains in flux, the 174 lbs. class remains rock solid with returning veteran redshirt senior Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward). Entering his final year, the three-year starter holds a 61-47 career record. In 2015-16, Davis went 17-14, including a stout 10-5 in duals and 5-3 in the MAC. He took sixth at the MAC Championships, as well as fourth at the Keystone Classic. In the preseason MAC rankings, Davis was ranked tied for third.

184 lbs.

The 184 lbs. class sees a bit of a shake-up from last season, as redshirt sophomore Kayne MacCallum (Green Oaks, Ill.-Libertyville) will regain a starting roll after a redshirt year. After being pressed into starting duty his 'true' freshman season at 174 lbs, MacCallum took a redshirt season in 2015-16, wrestling unattached at 184 lbs. The Illinois native competed in three meets, finishing the season with six wins. He took second place at the EMU Open, winning four matches.

197 lbs.

For the first time in four seasons, the 197 lbs. class will have a new starter as two-time NCAA qualifier Anthony Abro was lost to graduation. The new starter will be a familiar face, though, as redshirt sophomore Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven) will elevate from his 184 lbs. starting role of last season. In his first year as a starter, Hillman posted 14 wins, including nine in duals and four in the MAC. He had two technical falls and two major decision wins in dual action.

HWT

Hutchison returns for his third season as the heavyweight starter, coming off his best season so far as an Eagle. Hutchison posted a team-high 21 wins, including a 10-5 dual mark and a 5-3 conference mark. He was third in team dual points with 40. His regular season performance earned him an at-large bid into the NCAA Championships, his first career post-season appearance. The Buchanan native holds a 50-39 career record at EMU, and was ranked third at heavyweight in the preseason MAC poll.
