The redshirt junior won the 141 lbs. title at the Keystone Classic
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Mid-American Conference announced today, Nov. 23, that wrestler Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) was named the MAC Wrestler of the Week for the period ending, Nov. 22. It was the first wrestler of the week honor for EMU this season and the first of Springer's career.
Springer captured the 141 lbs. crown at the Keystone Classic, Nov. 20. The redshirt junior went up against some of the top competition in his weight class to win the title. Springer got his day started with a huge upset, defeating No. 11 ranked Jimmy Gulibon of Penn State by 8-5 decision. Gulibon was ranked No. 1 in the tournament.
He followed that up with a 12-6 decision in the quarterfinals, and then a 6-4 decision over the No. 4 seeded Robert Lee of Pitt. In the finals, Springer upended another Nittany Lion, this time Kade Moss, by 5-2 decision to take the 141 lbs. title. His efforts led EMU to a third-place team finish out of 12 teams.
The Eagles are off until after the Thanksgiving holiday. They return to action when they fly west to take part in the Cliff Keen Tournament in Las Vegas. The two-day event will run from Friday, Dec. 2 to Saturday, Dec. 3.
