Raymond Earns All-American Honors at NCAA Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Senior Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. – Mason) of the Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team wrapped up the Eagles' season Saturday, Nov. 19, at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. After finishing 154th last season, Raymond came back with a vengeance this year, running to a 31st-place finish, which was good for All-American honors.
"I am so proud of Nick," exclaimed Head Coach John Goodridge. "He ran a smart, tough race, moving up through the field from start to finish, battling his competition and very windy conditions to achieve his All-American goal."
Unfavorable weather conditions definitely came into play early on, as race conditions were very cold and windy. The pack remained close throughout the opening half of the race, with Raymond eventually sitting in 66th near the halfway point. The Erie, Mich. native continued to move up the standings, as he held onto 45th heading into the final stretch of the race.
Ultimately, Raymond crossed the finish line in 30:18.9, which was good for 31st. Based on his top-40 finish, Raymond earned All-American honors, becoming the 15th Eagle in program history to earn the honor, and the first since Corey Nowitzke in 2006.
This marks the end of the 2016 season for the Eagles, and it turned out to be one of the best in recent memory. The squad captured their seventh consecutive Mid-American Conference title in record fashion, bringing home the top-five individual spots for the first time in conference history. Raymond also repeated as MAC Individual Champion for the second year in a row, while Goodridge was named MAC Coach of the Year for the 11th time.
