YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - For the second consecutive season, senior Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. - Mason) of the Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team will represent EMU on the national stage, competing as an individual qualifier to the NCAA Championships, Saturday, Nov. 19.
"Hopefully Nick can profit from having competed in last year's national championship," explained Head Coach John Goodridge. "While the course is different, the previous experience of competing in such a competitive event can be helpful for him."
The all-region honoree earned his at-large bid last Saturday, Nov. 12, one day after the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Nov. 11, in Madison, Wis. He secured the bid after a great regional race, as he held strong near the front of the pack for a majority of the event. Ultimately, Raymond crossed the finish line in fifth-place with a time of 30:25.2, which was a career-best mark by nearly 15 seconds.
Raymond also earned an at-large bid last year, finishing 154th against the top runners in the nation. Specifically, the Erie, Mich. native clocked in with a time of 31:29.8.
Raymond continues the trend of Eagles who have won the individual MAC title and went on to qualify to the NCAA Championships. The list of EMU harriers to accomplish this feat include greats Boaz Cheboiywo, Gavin Thompson, Gordon Minty, and Corey Nowitzke.
Raymond will be joined by three other individual qualifiers from the Great Lakes Region, as Matthew Schwartzer and Jason Crist of Indiana, as well as Jaret Carpenter from Purdue, also earned at-large bids.
The NCAA Championships will take place in Terre Haute, Ind. at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, with the women kicking things off at 11 a.m., while the men will race at noon. The race will be livestreamed by FloTrack, which requires a FloPRO subscription. To view the live stream, please click here. For more information on the championships, please click here.
